Mertens Prime, named a Top 10 restaurant by Grand Rapids Magazine for 2 consecutive years, is a French brasserie and steakhouse set in a historic 1914-built former hotel lobby and dining room that preserves and celebrates Grand Rapids' past. We offer a variety of French classics along with an impressive French-touched steak menu, including Chateaubriand. The Mertens cocktail list is an exact replica of the drinks and menu design from the New Hotel Mertens bar, circa 1939, and includes the same cocktails served in 1939 that are as relevant today as they were 80 years ago.


Mertens Rooftop offers a full bar and a menu of appetizers. To book a reservation at Mertens Rooftop, select "Outdoor Seating", if available.

    July 6th is the evening for the City of Grand Rapids fireworks show, but the 4th itself usually offers a great view of smaller fireworks displays around the city. Each reservation includes a complimentary cocktail from our Rooftop cocktail list or a complimentary soft drink. Guests may order more items at the venue per our usual menu pricing. Please consider the cost of your included items when processing your tip amount. Guests may arrive at any time after 8:30PM. The venue will close at 11:30PM.     What an awful experience. It ruined what was supposed to be a highlight of my wife’s birthday. When we arrived for our reservation, we were told the hostess would “be right back to seat us.” After waiting 15 mins, a bartender told us to just take the elevator up to the rooftop. When we got there, another employee told us to take a seat. We sat there for 30 mins and were completely ignored by the staff. We never even received a menu, let alone drinks or food. We gave up and went elsewhere. 45 minutes wasted.

    One of the worst “dining” experiences I’ve ever had. Highly disappointed. I’m not sure how this place will remain in business.

    We have dined here several times. This time was a Sunday evening and, sadly, the place was empty! The menu has subtle seasonal changes but is basically classic French bistro-style plus REALLY good steaks - frankly better tasting and much better value than at most steak houses (including Mortons and Ruth Chris). Their "frites" are to die for. While I have not had any of their poutine options, starting with great fries is a must-maybe next trip. The portions are large enough to feed most people - we had appetizers and saved room for dessert, so we had about half our entrees boxed for later. I love the fact that they have a cheese cart - most people think about cheese as an appetizer, but I have enjoyed their cheeses plus either a sauterne or port as a dessert like the French. The wine list, while not enormous, has a nice range in price and style. They have GREAT cocktails including many "old-timey" ones.

    The rooftop is delightful. Great view of the city, delicious drinks and bites. The service is attentive and friendly.

    Started off downstairs. Booth was super cute, and they told us about the building. Cheese cart was recommended and did not disappoint. Steak frites overflowed the plate and needed a togo box. The bacon strip that came with the filet was as big as the plate. We also tried the spinach and brussel sprouts. Too much food. It cleared up so we got to watch the sunset upstairs on the roof. It was so what we needed. We were too full for dessert but we saw the cheese cake go to another table and I definitely want to come back and just do some drinks and desserts. Everyone was super sweet. Thank you, Braydon and Kyle! We had the best date night!

    Food was not hot. Herbed potato croquettes were flavorless and tested like they were fried in old grease. The deep fried brussel sprouts and Belgian pommes frites also tasted as if they were cooked in old grease. I did not taste the vinegar-honey glaze on the brussels sprouts but they were definitely deep fried. My seat was dirty with crumbs. The value of the food is not worth the price. Staffing was short, the bartender waited on my table and several others.

    When we arrived there was nobody to help us figure out where to go. Doors were locked. We found people that were carting food around. It was strange they had loaves of bread just sitting on top of a cart- looked unsanitary. We made our way up and the waitress was very quiet and didn’t know much. Food wasn’t worth the prices and the drinks were very small. The only nice part was the weather and views. It was sort of disappointing.
