From its prime perch in The Shops at Stonefield, matchbox will delight neighborhood workers, visitors, and residents with a casual, welcoming spot for a quick weekday lunch, lively happy hour, bottomless weekend brunch, and dinner for both date nights and groups. Owned by Maurice Kelly, a technologist and former Navy Intelligence Officer turned restaurateur, Matchbox Charlottesville opens this winter, boasting artisanal pizzas, creative American bistro fare, and a come-as-you-are vibe.

A definitive element of the Matchbox dining experience is the custom pizza oven that fires up signature thin-crust pizzas within minutes, and its surrounding pizza bar that offers a front-row view of the action. The bar at Matchbox is a focal point of the dining experience.. Hand-painted murals from local artists add further context to the neighborhood, and bring in a touch of personality as well.

    We waited almost 20 minutes for a server to take our drink order then another 15 minutes for her to come back to take our dinner order. It’s unfortunate the service was so bad because the food was very good.

    Ate there during Restaurant Week. Food was very good, price was extremely reasonable, but waitress was not very friendly and was not very attentive to our table for water refills, etc. We sat outside and the weather was nice, but even 1?water refill would have been nice. Finally caught her to get refills along with our dessert.

    The service was exemplary. Sure, the food was good, but the service was over the top great. Kind of rare to find nowadays.

    If I could give the service a 0 rating I would. Our server needs to find a job out of the service industry. He was never around and when he was and you asked for anything like more water he acted as if you were bothering him. Food came out cold, would never go back

    Once we were seated, service was great, but they did not have a table available for us. Brunch food was good, although we were not given syrup with our French toast and it was too busy to ask for it.

    I am never disappointed when I dine at Matchbox. Lunch or dinner, the food is always excellent. There are so many good items to choose from. It's a comfortable place to eat. The staff is always so frindly, professional and gives wonderful service. The owner is the nicest person and cares about his staff and clientele. I really recommend eating at Matchbox
