Owned by Maurice Kelly, a technologist and former Navy Intelligence Officer turned restaurateur, Matchbox Charlottesville opens this winter, boasting artisanal pizzas, creative American bistro fare, and a come-as-you-are vibe.

A definitive element of the Matchbox dining experience is the custom pizza oven that fires up signature thin-crust pizzas within minutes, and its surrounding pizza bar that offers a front-row view of the action. The bar at Matchbox is a focal point of the dining experience.. Hand-painted murals from local artists add further context to the neighborhood, and bring in a touch of personality as well.

We have always had great service at Matchbox in the past, but this last time it was fair. We had our reservation booked through Open Table and when we arrived the hostess told us that they may not be able to seat us and she would have to check with the manager. This was despite the place being only half full and plenty of empty tables inside and out. Our waitress was extremely slow in taking our orders. I saw my drink sitting at the bar for 10 minutes while the ice melted before she brought it over. She forgot to bring over a lot of our sides and condiments, including my salad dressing, which I had to get up and ask for myself at the kitchen window. She never came back to check on us throughout our entire meal. One of our guests was missing his sides and condiments and asked for them, but did not receive them until asking a second time, which at that point was after everyone else had already finished their meals. We all wanted additional drinks, but never had the opportunity to order them since she never came back to check on our table. We tried to flag her down a couple of times, but either she didn’t see us or was looking right over us. And she wasn’t busy at the time. She was just hanging on the side of the bar looking around. We did see her sneak a puff of her Vape at one point though and then go over to exhale by the bar. Like I said we have always had great service in the past, but this particular night made us question if management had changed or something and if we will return again.

Visited on a Friday evening for dinner and were greeted immediately by a dirty looking mop leaning up against an inoperable wood fired oven. Perhaps they were short staffed. Wait staff were very, very nice and looked busy, but the food was not good. Pizzas in particular were lukewarm and the flavors were meh. Menu seemed limited from what I recall from dining at other matchboxes.

Came in for brunch. They Bloody Mary’s were 75% horseradish and undrinkable. Waffle maker was broken. MD Crab Benedict was ok, the cornbread base overpowered the crab cake and the hollandaise was bland. French toast was good. Server was attentive.

We waited almost 20 minutes for a server to take our drink order then another 15 minutes for her to come back to take our dinner order. It’s unfortunate the service was so bad because the food was very good.

Ate there during Restaurant Week. Food was very good, price was extremely reasonable, but waitress was not very friendly and was not very attentive to our table for water refills, etc. We sat outside and the weather was nice, but even 1?water refill would have been nice. Finally caught her to get refills along with our dessert.

The service was exemplary. Sure, the food was good, but the service was over the top great. Kind of rare to find nowadays.

If I could give the service a 0 rating I would. Our server needs to find a job out of the service industry. He was never around and when he was and you asked for anything like more water he acted as if you were bothering him. Food came out cold, would never go back

Once we were seated, service was great, but they did not have a table available for us. Brunch food was good, although we were not given syrup with our French toast and it was too busy to ask for it.
