Welcome to Masa & Agave, a speakeasy-style cantina hidden below stairs at the historic Hotel Ivy in Downtown Minneapolis. On Thursday's, Friday's and Saturday's from 8pm to Close we are first-come, first-served and do not accept reservations during this time.

Worshipped as the Aztec gods of fertility and long life, venerated for their powers of sustenance, corn masa and agave have been central to Mexican culture and cuisine since ancient times.

Using authentic techniques, we prepare corn masa-based starters and Mexico City-style tacos that are bursting with regional flavors, along with dinner classics like Pork Carnitas and Negro Monelo-Braised Beef Short Ribs.

Our collection of 200 agave spirits pays homage to the jimadores and mezcaleros who have labored over their craft for generations. Sip on a copita or two, or gather friends for one of our signature Margaritas - try the Tradicionale, Tamarindo or a Margarita al Gusto mixed with your choice of spirit. Salud!

I honestly can’t pick what was worst, the food, the service, the drinks, the layout, the team, the timing, the tiny little tables, just absolutely everything was horrible. Guacamole was served in a chilled molcajete which means it was sitting in a fridge and the edges were already brown, not a dash of salt and can taste the old lime juice, guacamole is supposed to be served fresh, and would have appreciated hand cut chips not store bought especially if you are trying to charge $20 for it, portions are small, I came in hungry, left hungrier. Don’t recommend if you are trying to have decent Mexican food.

Best birria tacos I’ve had in a while. Service not great, but not horrible

This was my first time at Masa & Agave and was pleasantly surprised. The ambiance is fun and the staff is attentive from the moment you walk in. My server, Jeanneta, was so nice and went over the menu and pointed out a couple of favorites as I was having a hard time deciding what to try. I had the enchiladas which were a great recommendation, the sauces were really good! Also tried the chips and guacamole which were fresh and made this California girl now living in the East Coast, very happy. Looking forward to trying other items on the menu on my next work trip. If you like posting to Instagram while you are out and about, the bar at this restaurant is beautiful as is the decor overall!

Love the place. Food and drinks were great. Service was attentive and polite. Great date spot with the low lighting. We be going back.

The ambiance was very nice and cozy. Noise level low so we could actually have a conversation over dinner. The drinks were good. The nacho appetizer was excellent, but very small. The enchiladas were ok, but a little dry and luke warm. Service was very good.

Our server Abbey was wonderful. She was very sweet, attentive was knowledgeable about the menu and was very open to giving suggestions. We had previously been to the attached restaurant upstairs, but,This was our first time at Masa. We were seated in a really cute comfortable nook area just under the windows when we arrived we were maybe the only other table there we stayed for a couple hours and people started to trickle in but the cute underground speakeasy feel of the place absorbed any of the other activity around us. The drinks we had were great twists on old standards such as the Moscow Mule and margaritas We had two drinks each and they were just as different as they were amazing. The food was beyond our expectation as it had a great authentic look and taste to it and definitely defied our expectation. The nachos were my favorite and I would definitely come back and have those again. And to end our evening we had the tres leches, which was the perfect nightcap to our meal. I also really liked the feel of This cute little spot because you could sit and have a more intimate or quiet dinner with just two people or you had room to have a party of six or 12 and still maintain that cozy intimate feel. I would definitely recommend this place.

Ambience: The music was very loud - it was a little difficult to have a conversation. The lights were pretty low and it was hard to read the menu. Food: I had the elote and tinga de pollo tacos. The elote was very spicy but had an incredible flavor. The tacos were okay but not anything special. If anything they were a little small for the price. I also had some tres leches cake, which was very disappointing. The cake had a strange texture - I think it was stale - and the flavor was subpar. Drink: I ordered the Oaxaca Old Fashioned. While obviously not a true old fashioned, it was an incredible drink. I loved the smokiness and smoothness. Service: The waitress was very good. She was on top of filling our waters and was very attentive. Overall: I’m not convinced that I’d return. The food and drink were good overall but the ambience (loud and dark) really affected my ability to enjoy the meal.
