Intimate and exclusive due to it's limited seating, Louie’s California Bistro has long been touted as one of Santa Barbara's favorite local secrets. Unconcerned with flashy food trends, the focus at Louie's has always been to take local ingredients and make them shine, often through classic style cooking and recipes. Add in Central Coast wines and a table on the historic wrap around veranda and you have the makings for a truly enjoyable dining experience. Louie's resides within a local landmark: The Upham Hotel. The Upham, built in 1871, is California's longest continuously operating hotel and is one of Santa Barbara's oldest buildings, having survived the earthquake of 1925.

I am 97 years old. Online I made a reservation at Louie"s for 6:30 PM on a Friday. The reservation was CONFIRMED VIA MY EMAIL. I arrived on time in a Uber cab, but found the restaurant CLOSED! "Gee, we're so sorry," said the staff person. What choice did I have but to order anther cab and go elsewhere at increased expense. What an incompetent and careless management. WS

No alcohol was available and because we made our reservation late we were not made aware of this. Other than that, the food and menu were horribly out of date with dishes that reflected dining out in the 80s. Many dishes had a heavy cream sauce on top including the crab dumplings where it did not belong. The fettuccine Alfredo also made with cream is not authentic. Everything was heavy and did not seem fresh including the fish. This was not at all the type of dining experience I expected from a restaurant with California Cuisine in its name - it is not reflective of what it should be. This menu needs to be totally overhauled and refreshed including the decor.

Louie's at the Upham never disappoints. A very nice restaurant, with very good food and we love sitting outside on a nice evening. We can't wait to go back!

Every choice is a good one. I often have an appetizer and salad and dessert, but entrees are also outstanding. You really can't make a bad choice, whether you love meatloaf, pasta, salads, seafood or other.

Catch of the day was underseasoned, chicken piccata was just aight. Tomato salad was good.

I always enjoy dinner at Louie’s so I decided to give brunch a try. It’s a limited menu that leaned a little heavy on breakfast dishes. I chose the avocado toast - it barely had a thin layer of avocado spread but was topped with a ton of arugula. The eggs Benedict was very tasty. I’ll probably stick to dinner reservations going forward.
