Before the James Beard Award and the Gourmet Magazine review, Lotus of Siam was a small little hole in the wall located in Commercial Center in Las Vegas. November 1999 was the month Chef Saipin and her husband Bill took over Lotus of Siam. Since then, Thai food became an adventure for those willing to step out of their comfort zones for Asian Cuisine. Chef Saipin’s distinct cooking has been passed down from generation to generation, from both her grandmothers and her husband’s grandmothers. Her northern style cooking has opened America into the “Northern” world of Thailand, away from the Bangkok style of sweet and tang. The northern menu consists of hearty herbs and spices, along with Thai style stews and coconut-less curries. Through her set menus, our guests can dine and enjoy recipes from over 100 years in the Chutima family.

Best Thai restaurant in the country, IMHO. I have been visiting this restaurant, including the original location, for more than 20 years. Every visit I try to eat here at least once. This time I brought 5 work colleagues and they agreed, best Thai food ever! Favorites: fried garlic shrimp, green curry w/crispy duck, fried rice w/pineapple, honestly you cannot go wrong! Stellar wine list and cocktails too!

We found the food to be good, not great and very pricy. We’ve had better food at smaller, local restaurants. The appetizers (satay and a fried bacon-wrapped shrimp) were hot and flavorful, the Tom Yam had a nice taste but was only warm, not very hot in spite of the flaming pot it was in. Our main courses were typical, and average. Yellow curry was very watery with few vegetables; wok fried ribeye with Thai basil was okay but not the 6 spice level we requested The crispy duck dish with green beans was sub par- too spicy to eat although we asked for level 2 and the duck was overcooked and tough. We guessed the spice levels got mixed up on our order. The duck and rib eye were expensive up-charges and definitely not worth it. The place was so noisy, we could barely hear the waitress, except when she tried to upsell our shrimp appetizer course for another one at double the price $35 vs $18! Overall feeling from our group was that it’s a tourist trap. Since we live here, we’ll look for a better place.

One of my favorite restaurants in the entire country. This is a spot. You should not miss when you are in Las Vegas. I make it a point to go each and every time. Everything about it is phenomenal.
