Le Coq is James Beard Best Chef finalist Tara Monsod’s new wave French steakhouse. Inspired by the modern Parisian culinary landscape, chef Tara reinvents classic dishes through her signature approach, blending cross-cultural references and ingredients for a distinctly SoCal expression of French cuisine. Bright touches and hyper-seasonal products ground the menu with San Diego style, while nods to chef Tara’s Southeast Asian background are interwoven throughout. Located in downtown La Jolla in a 1930’s historic building with exposed brick walls, steel trusses, and a barrel-vaulted ceiling. Into this storied shell is inserted a posh 1970’s diner club.

Straight from the heart of Paris, we’re thrilled to welcome our friends from Les Enfants du Marché to Le Coq for a special two-night collaboration. Savor an exclusive à la carte menu at the bar, paired with crafted drinks and DJ-spun vibes. Sunday, October 13th, 5:00-8:00pm Monday, October 14th, 5:00-8:00pm Before opening Le Coq, Executive Chef Tara Monsod traveled to Paris for R&D and staged at Les Enfants du Marché, an avant-garde dining counter nestled in the iconic Marché des Enfants Rouges, famed for natural wines and innovative cuisine. You might even recognize them from an Action Bronson episode on YouTube. A $25 non-refundable deposit is required to secure your reservation. This amount will be credited toward your final bill.

Aesthetically it’s a pretty restaurant and bar. Service was good. Food for price was a no for us. The flavors were not bad but nothing memorable or amazing,definitely a one and done for us.

Service was great and the food was fine but all our food came out cold. The onion tart, the creamed spinach, and the mushrooms were all cold. A little disappointing honestly.

My latest obsession. Everything is such a vibe. Not only is the food wonderful, but feels like you’re getting an experience of being in a 70s French restaurant having the time of your life. Terrific bread service, best chicken liver mousse I’ve ever had. Duck is exceptional. Happiness is effortless at le coq.

Incredible service and hospitality. Beautiful interior that feels French mid century industrial, sexy. We’ll be back for the baguette, sweetbreads, tuna tartare, onion tart, and everything else we wanted to but didn’t have enough room. There’s no other place like it in San Diego.

Fantastic ambiance, solid service, lovely food. I would love to go back just to sit at the bar for cocktails and frites.

Service and atmosphere was fantastic. The duck was super unbalanced, over sweet and lukewarm. Chicken liver mousse was recommended but did not meet expectations. Oily and just lacking any distinctive flavor. Loved the steak and frites and the chicken skin butter with baguette. Overall I’d not recommend especially given the cost. Animae next time.

Love the decor, atmosphere, and service. The drinks were great. But the food was off. I appreciate the chef trying to put a twist on familiar dishes or flavors, but those twists rarely worked. We had an onion tart that was a take on French onion soup. The cheese, onion, and short rib filling was tasty, but the crust had too much nutmeg(?) or five spice(?) and it overpowered the whole dish. There was a similar note in the au poivre sauce on our steak frites. Something fragrant threw off the sauce. I’m hopeful the kitchen can dial it in. May try to revisit in six months.
