Le Coq is James Beard Best Chef finalist Tara Monsod’s new wave French steakhouse. Inspired by the modern Parisian culinary landscape, chef Tara reinvents classic dishes through her signature approach, blending cross-cultural references and ingredients for a distinctly SoCal expression of French cuisine. Bright touches and hyper-seasonal products ground the menu with San Diego style, while nods to chef Tara’s Southeast Asian background are interwoven throughout. Located in downtown La Jolla in a 1930’s historic building with exposed brick walls, steel trusses, and a barrel-vaulted ceiling. Into this storied shell is inserted a posh 1970’s diner club.

D'après les éditeur·rices d'OpenTable : Le Coq est le dernier établissement en date des restaurants à succès du groupe Puffer Malarkey Collective. On y trouve des versions revisitées de classiques français aux influences de la Californie du Sud et de l'Asie. La cheffe Tara Monsod, nommée au James Beard Award, impressionne avec des plats remarquables comme le canard à l'orange accompagné de purée de tamarin, de kumquat et de chicorée. Les murs en briques apparentes de ce bâtiment historique des années 1930, les banquettes en velours rouge et les plantes luxuriantes confèrent au restaurant une atmosphère parisienne sophistiquée.

Food and cocktails were really good. The restaurant is beautiful and the vibe is vibrant and fun.

I love Tara’s work. I’ve been following her for a few years now and I was so excited to see her new project come to life. Maybe it was because this was a preset dinner service, but everything tasted good - but nothing was special. Seasoning great, flavors great, but it did not wow me. I left the evening content, and I wish i left with more of a smile. Stars of the show: the desserts and the bread starter. So at least it started and ended with a bang.

We went for the Four Course offerings for Valentines Day. The food was fabulous and the wine pairing was spot on! The only complaint was that it was so very salty! I cook and I salt 🙂 but this was a lot. Hopefully it’s not like that all the time. We will be back!

Not what we expected at all. Very loud, almost nightclub environment. Strange decor, food was average but not the prices.

Service was awful. Waited nearly 45 minutes to be seated when we had a reservation at 7:15 made 2 weeks in advance. Also, misleading information on their website regarding the menu being offered on Valentine’s Day. Made no sense to me or my date why they would not offer their ordinary menu in addition to the fixed Valentine’s menu (which I specifically chose on my reservation I did not wish to dine from.) Safe to say we will not be returning, especially due to the seating arrangements. For an establishment meant to have a classy or romantic ambiance, it could not have gotten less intimate. Being sandwiched between two other couples, so close they could hear everything we are saying, was by far the least enjoyable part of the evening. 1 star all around.

Great spot for a night out! Amazing food. Cocktails and wine selection were superb. Went for the Valentines’s Day fixed menu and every course was outstanding. And wine pairings highlighted every course

Absolutely fantastic food. A bit of a wait after seating but worth it! The filet and the swordfish were shockingly good! What a lovely Valentines Day with a brilliant chefs menu, THANK YOU!

The team made our evening just perfect t! They worked so hard to help me surprise my husband and were happy to accommodate every request. Thank you for reminding me what real service should be. Loved every second.

Once again San Diegos's first ever James Beard Award finalist,@tara.monsod, Executive Chef @lecoq.sd brought her passion to the table. Everything prepared to perfection & paced beautifully. Ambiance is classy & have a welcoming atmosphere, Service is top notch . Wishing everyone a night filled with love & joy!
