Le Coq is James Beard Best Chef finalist Tara Monsod’s new wave French steakhouse. Inspired by the modern Parisian culinary landscape, chef Tara reinvents classic dishes through her signature approach, blending cross-cultural references and ingredients for a distinctly SoCal expression of French cuisine. Bright touches and hyper-seasonal products ground the menu with San Diego style, while nods to chef Tara’s Southeast Asian background are interwoven throughout. Located in downtown La Jolla in a 1930’s historic building with exposed brick walls, steel trusses, and a barrel-vaulted ceiling. Into this storied shell is inserted a posh 1970’s diner club.

The restaurant "make over and ambiance is impressive from the former Herringbone restaurant. The service was great, but the food was mediocre. The steak tartar was "good", but lacked in overall taste. Same for the lamb chops, which lacked flavor (no sauce) and were overcooked. I ordered medium rare, but it came out medium. The gnocchi pasta was just ok, with a mild sauce. The sweetbreads were good, but did not have a great French sauce, which we are used to, having lived in Europe where "ris de veau" (sweetbreads) is a signature dish in Belgium and France. They just need to bring the food quality up to a level similar to go along with the outstanding decor and ambiance!

Pretty run of the mill expensive trying to be cool fare. Bread was barely warm (and $12) but the salty butter was nice. Sweetbreads appetizer portion was good for two people who were trying it for the first time, although I’d like to try it not deep fried someday. Cerise et citron drink was delicious and spicy in a fun, not overpowering way. Gnocchi was lovely and soft and made very good with a few twists of pepper. Basque cheesecake was too sour. Chocolate mousse cake was tasty on the top half (mousse) but hard on the lower half (brownie). Praline ice cream was good. Wait staff was numerous but slow, especially for a Wednesday when there was hardly anyone there. Ambience was very odd. Music was loud and featured the n-word a lot!

Wow wow wow! My husband and I went for date night and it did not disappoint. I saw that on Wednesday night they have a special deal of table side flambé of a whole chicken for two people. It comes with a bistro salad, a baguette and chocolate mouse cake. It was so delicious and what a presentation!

Le Coq was on my list for a few weeks-months now. I just got back from a trip to Paris so naturally, was looking forward to more French inspired food. While the food overall was delicious, it definitely has an asian-fusion flair. My favorites of the entire meal were actually the bistro salad and the pistachio mousseline dessert. Cocktails were wonderful and very well done/balanced. I favored the Framboise Tonic (gin based cocktail, a Negroni-riff) and The Lumiere (I believe this was mentioned as a seasonal cocktail). With the onion tart sliding in for an honorable mention... Ambience was terrific and whoever designed the interior did a great job. Some tables were a little tight in proximity, but overall not a bother to the atmosphere. Great lively date night spot if you're looking for a more elevated experience.

The spiny lobster was mushy and had no taste. Our steak was very average and lukewarm. The butter that is supposed to be so good was beyond disappointing. It had flavor but NOT enjoyable flavor. It was our anniversary dinner and we were extremely disappointed. We knew it would be pricey, but we’re happy to pay for an expensive dinner if the food was exceptional. There was nothing about the meal that was exceptional. We asked another couple to join us to celebrate our anniversary and kept having to apologize for the disappointing meal.. The other couple has lived in Paris and is very familiar with French food and fine dining in France. In particular, one friend ordered the muscles and was extremely disappointed,, dare I say he hated the muscles which are one of his favorite dishes.? He enjoyed the short rib appetizer and was reasonably pleased with the steaks and the bernaise sauce, however he and I both left our frites in our plate. One look and I knew they did not look like French frites! They tasted old with absolutelyno flavor. I left my entire order of the frites on the plate. At the end of a dinner in any restaurant, particularly one with fine dining, I ask myself would I go back there. My answer to Le Coq is a resounding no!!

Delicious dinner with friends. Onion Tart, muscles, baguette w chicken skin butter, and the celery salad were our starters. Loved them all. Dinner choices were gnocchi, swordfish, steak frites, and the chicken. Again all were delicious. Desserts were also tasty with the pistachio creme puff (light and creamy) and the chocolate cake (rich and decadent). Cocktails were on point! Overall everything was great! 4/5 stars as nothing blew my socks off. High quality food but nothing blew me away. Would definitely go back.
