Le Coq is James Beard Best Chef finalist Tara Monsod’s new wave French steakhouse. Inspired by the modern Parisian culinary landscape, chef Tara reinvents classic dishes through her signature approach, blending cross-cultural references and ingredients for a distinctly SoCal expression of French cuisine. Bright touches and hyper-seasonal products ground the menu with San Diego style, while nods to chef Tara’s Southeast Asian background are interwoven throughout. Located in downtown La Jolla in a 1930’s historic building with exposed brick walls, steel trusses, and a barrel-vaulted ceiling. Into this storied shell is inserted a posh 1970’s diner club.

    Straight from the heart of Paris, we’re thrilled to welcome our friends from Les Enfants du Marché to Le Coq for a special two-night collaboration. Savor an exclusive à la carte menu at the bar, paired with crafted drinks and DJ-spun vibes. Sunday, October 13th, 5:00-8:00pm Monday, October 14th, 5:00-8:00pm Before opening Le Coq, Executive Chef Tara Monsod traveled to Paris for R&D and staged at Les Enfants du Marché, an avant-garde dining counter nestled in the iconic Marché des Enfants Rouges, famed for natural wines and innovative cuisine. You might even recognize them from an Action Bronson episode on YouTube. And the best part? You don’t need a ticket to Paris to experience it. $25 deposit required for reservation.

    It was a nice place. The food was good I would say. The service wasn’t very good. It took an extremely long time for the food to come out on a night that the restaurant was not close to full.

    My recent dining experience at Le Coq was nothing short of extraordinary. From the moment we walked in, the interior design set the tone for what would be a luxurious evening. The décor struck a perfect balance between elegance and modern sophistication, with soft lighting, plush seating, and tastefully minimalist accents that created a warm, welcoming atmosphere. The ambiance was intimate yet lively, enhanced by the gentle hum of conversation and the clink of glasses in the background. We began with the yellowtail and tuna tartare, both impeccably fresh and artfully presented. The yellowtail had a delicate, clean flavor, while the tuna tartare was rich and creamy, perfectly complemented by a hint of acidity. We paired our appetizers with caviar butter and chicken butter served alongside a warm, crisp baguette. These opening dishes felt indulgent yet balanced. The butters were the epitome of luxury—the caviar adding a briny richness and the chicken butter offering an unexpected yet delightful depth of flavor. The duck that followed was a highlight of the evening. It’s perfectly prepared, medium rare meat gave way to tender, succulent meat that was rich without being overwhelming. Every bite was pure perfection. This course was paired with expertly crafted cocktails, each one tailored to the meal with precision and creativity. The cocktails not only complemented the food but elevated the entire dining experience. The steak frites was a flawless rendition of a classic. The steak was cooked exactly as ordered, its juices blending beautifully with the crispy, golden fries. Seasoned to perfection! The dish was simple yet elevated, a testament to the kitchen’s attention to detail and commitment to quality ingredients. Beyond the food, the ambiance of the restaurant played a pivotal role in the experience. The combination of soft lighting, music, and impeccable design made the experience all the more enjoyable!

    Chef Tara Monsod and the Puffer Malarkey Collective have done it again! My family and I are big fans of this restaurant group and especially chef Tara, and they did not disappoint with Le Coq. As soon as you walk in you will notice the beautiful ambiance and thoughtful staff. The craft cocktails are wonderful, and the food is truly out of this world. Our favorites were the onion tart, steak frites and pistachio dessert! The service is world class, and chef even came to our table to greet us which was very special. At 9 they brought in a great DJ also to keep the fun weekend vibes flowing. We didn’t make it to the 10pm burger happy hour, but will be sure to check it out next time! Couldn’t recommend this restaurant experience more!

    Wife and I dined with friends. Shared everything. Food was only mediocre across the menu. Wine list was fine, but wines offered by glass could be better. Out of the lager beer on a Sat night. Shouldn't have printed it on the nightly menu. Service and ambiance were great but we have our doubts this place will survive. Food needs to be better for us to want to dine again.

    Great date night experience. Awesome food, great service. Yellowtail was top selection. Music was too loud had to sit side by side to have a conversation the night we went on a Friday night.

    The food at Le Coq was very good. The service was attentive at the beginning and when it was time to pay the bill and leave … things slowed to a hault. We finally got the bill and looked at it and we were charged $47 for a martini (this is not New York City) and my husband told the waiter (when he was informed they were out of the gin he wanted)… that he was open to trying something else but did not want a $35 martini… ( that price point and up) … he told my husband he would get the manager AND we waited ANOTHER 15 mins … he never called the manager and we finally gave up. It was such a stupid thing for this waiter to do… he knew he was at fault and then chose to make it even worse. Too bad because we WOULD have been good customers.
