Le Coq is James Beard Best Chef finalist Tara Monsod’s new wave French steakhouse. Inspired by the modern Parisian culinary landscape, chef Tara reinvents classic dishes through her signature approach, blending cross-cultural references and ingredients for a distinctly SoCal expression of French cuisine. Bright touches and hyper-seasonal products ground the menu with San Diego style, while nods to chef Tara’s Southeast Asian background are interwoven throughout. Located in downtown La Jolla in a 1930’s historic building with exposed brick walls, steel trusses, and a barrel-vaulted ceiling. Into this storied shell is inserted a posh 1970’s diner club.

D'après les éditeur·rices d'OpenTable : Le Coq est le dernier établissement en date des restaurants à succès du groupe Puffer Malarkey Collective. On y trouve des versions revisitées de classiques français aux influences de la Californie du Sud et de l'Asie. La cheffe Tara Monsod, nommée au James Beard Award, impressionne avec des plats remarquables comme le canard à l'orange accompagné de purée de tamarin, de kumquat et de chicorée. Les murs en briques apparentes de ce bâtiment historique des années 1930, les banquettes en velours rouge et les plantes luxuriantes confèrent au restaurant une atmosphère parisienne sophistiquée.

    Great food, our waiter was excellent with recommendations, and overall was attentive but not overbearing. Food was executed with precision and had high level of consistency and thoughtfulness between the ingredients chosen and intended flavor profile. The lumiere cocktail was a standout as well as the denver steak and pomme darphin.

    Everything was over expectations. Really 5 stars. Only bad point is the music, too loud, very hard to have a conversation.

    We felt the apps could have been timed better. The 3 apps we ordered were delivered one after another and the two of us had 3 apps all on the table at the same time. We would have appreciated it if the reception of the apps was spaced out a little better. All the apps we ordered were delicious, the tuna tartare, the onion tart and the sweet breads were delicious and flavorful. Our steak frites came out medium well to well done when we were expecting medium rare. Our waiter took away the well done steak and the manager delivered a more appropriately cooked plate. I thought the steak was ok, nothing to write home about and I probably wouldn't order again. I would like to try their other steak options before passing judgement on their main entrees.

    Music is played at a loud level through several ceiling mounted speakers. Rather than act as background it becomes noise that intrudes on conversations.

    Beautiful restaurant, young staff,good food. Loved the steak frites, local yellowtail and chicken liver mousse Disappointed in onion tart Desserts were great Music very loud limiting conversation , staff receptive to lowering volume.

    We had a less than optimal experience at what I had heard was a great place, but expensive. The menu was a bit too "meat and potatoes" for our taste, with only 1 vegetarian entre and no seafood entres -- a bit tough for a pescatarian. The gnocchi was a bit too mushy with almost too subtle of flavors. The pork was reported to me as a bit boring also. The yellowtail appetizer had fish that was a bit too fishy tasting so likely less fresh that it should be. Our initial drinks and first course came out in a reasonable time, with Exec Chef Tara even delivering one dish. The real issue was that it took 1 hour to get our entre course after that! We weren't seeing much at all coming out from the kitchen so I don't know what the issue was. Our server tried really hard to make us happy. Two managers came to our table in the interim also, apologizing for the delay and asking about the food. One drink order was also lost in the interim, which was comped because of the delay. The noise level was also quite high, and got worse as we were still there at 9pm because of the delay when a DJ started playing. Our server was quite apologetic as she understood the unreasonable service delay. In the end, after receiving and paying our bill, she brought out 3 comp desserts for us to share! She was really trying to improve our experience, which she did. The Basque cheesecake and flourless chocolate cake are to die for!!

    Outstanding service and fantastic food will definitely come back. It was for an anniversary so I would’ve liked to see a little bit more attention to the reason why we were there, but it was a good experience. The bill came out with the wrong charges, but it was fixed, felt a bit rushed but we ignored the verbal queue to hurry. Overall price was very high but mostly justified.

    Very good dining experience. I requested and was given a romantic booth in the back of the restaurant. The food was excellent.

    all show and no go! Beautiful restaurant, but the food lacked a heart. Very boring and under seasoned dishes. I’m really beginning to wonder about Brian Malarkey. He is spreading himself too thin with all his restaurants.
