Le Coq is James Beard Best Chef finalist Tara Monsod’s new wave French steakhouse. Inspired by the modern Parisian culinary landscape, chef Tara reinvents classic dishes through her signature approach, blending cross-cultural references and ingredients for a distinctly SoCal expression of French cuisine. Bright touches and hyper-seasonal products ground the menu with San Diego style, while nods to chef Tara’s Southeast Asian background are interwoven throughout. Located in downtown La Jolla in a 1930’s historic building with exposed brick walls, steel trusses, and a barrel-vaulted ceiling. Into this storied shell is inserted a posh 1970’s diner club.

Your feast will feature 4 courses and bread service, with shared sides accompanying the 3rd course. Price per adult is $107 and price per child (12 & under) is $42.

The food and service were excellent but the music in the large dining area was way too loud. The excuse was they were having an event in the bar. We complained several times until the manager came by at the end of the our meal. He used the same excuse but did finally lower the music level. They told us to come another Sunday or in the middle of the week for a more relaxed evening.

Overall the restaurant had more of a bar atomosphere. Dance floor level music made it impossible for conversation. The great food was overshadowed by the din. Can imagine going back except to sip a cocktail at the bar.

Had the baguette with chicken skin butter that was fantastic. Pork croquettes were very good. Gnoccki and Steak Frites both great too. Desert of chocolate gateau was perfect end. Cocktails were on point and the server was there whenever he needed to be. Highly recommend.

Pros: The atmosphere is good (but nothing outstanding), the attention and service are excellent. I mentioned that i was celebrating my anniversary and they had our table on time. Also, they brought us a complementary glass of champagne and a dessert. Cons: The liver chicken pate tastes like any pate you can buy at any supermarket. W e ordered the Australian Wagyu New York Steak medium, but they gave us medium well (that change completely the flavor of the meat). Being honest, I tried better Argentinians beef cuts at half price. To be a French restaurant I was surprised because they don’t have a cheese table selection or escargots. The prices are quite expensive for this kind of Cuisine ($400 for 2 people). I wouldn’t come back.

Le Coq was awesome! Our server Nick was fantastic! The celery salad and steak frites were perfect. Don’t forget your baguettes!

Exceptional service and incredible food and drink to accompany. I got the steak frites (I'm a sucker for pepper corn sauce) and it was incredibly flavorful with a brilliant crust. Wife got the filet, and it was very tender. Both cooked to perfection. We split the green beans and a bottle of wine (great selection of bottles). Food was classic nice steakhouse with modern twists that were very nice! Will definitely return!

The food and the service were outstandane the ambiance was great except that 1 couldn't see anything that was so dark. The car the cost will make it difficult to go on a regular basis, maybe for special occasions if they get some light in the dining room

The ambiance is fantastic.. I really want it to be great. However, It’s my second time and the service this time was not nearly as good. Clearly the bar has it dialed in vs the dining room- no bar seats available or standing room as we left.
