Lake Avenue Restaurant & Bar in Duluth, Minnesota has been around since 1991, back when Canal Park was better known as an industrial harbor rather than a tourist location. The interior at Lake Avenue Restaurant & Bar has a cozy feel to it, thanks in large part to the reclaimed lumber used for the tables, booths and bar as well as thriving plants. When the weather is nice, you can dine on our deck, furnished with Loll patio furniture made locally.
We are a small restaurant, limited to 15 tables and 70 seats indoors. Because of this we are not able to accommodate groups larger than 8 people. If your party is larger than 8 people, please understand that your group may be split at separate tables, potentially not near each other. Please call us to discuss accommodating your large group events.
Due to the invariability of Duluth weather, our deck is non-reservable (with or without dogs) and subject to be closed without much notice. We seat the patio on a first-come, first-serve basis.

This was a second visit, after an outstanding experience last year. I’m sorry to say it didn’t quite meet our expectations this time. Beverage options and service are great. Our table was next to the window, under a vent, and very cold. I had mussels and linguine. There was too much oil on the pasta, which made it difficult to eat. The mussels had little flavor, but the accompanying bread was delicious. The menu promised goat cheese, yogurt, olives, arugula, and cucumber on my partner’s lamb burger. What he got was cucumber, mixed lettuce, and so much tapenade that it overpowered the lamb. Were they out of the other toppings? If so, diners should be informed. Some hits, some misses tonight.

Our group of 4 each tried different menu offerings. Chicken thigh curry was excellent, both of the burgers were OK, and the mussel pasta left a lot to be desired. It was supposed to be pasta but came out like spaghetti noodles in a bowl of soup broth. There was a large cloud of smoke coming from the kitchen the entire visit. Highlight of our dinner was the bottle of Pecchenino Dolcetto wine that was available.

Had no idea of this place after over 40 years of coming to Duluth! You need to advertise more as you’re great!!!!

This place is much better than our experience tonight. The dinner menu is quite interesting. I wanted to try several items but settled on the "fish and chips" (mind the quotes). My dining companion ordered the curried chicken. We split a side salad. She had a cocktail and I ordered a Pinot Blanc, both excellent although the wine portion was modest. I think the bartender was serving us. He was chipper and answered our questions capably but seemed rushed, and AWOL when the entrees failed to appear other than to say, on the second pass, 'they're plating them now' ten minutes before they actually appeared. The vinaigrette dressing was peppery and delicious on the side salad, which was amply portioned and quite good. The pickled shallots were a nice touch. The curry chicken was crispy and delicious as was the rice cake. It was quickly demolished by my hungry companion. The main problem with the "fish and chips" was dried-out halibut (possibly from waiting for the chicken). Otherwise, the roasted potatoes and harissa were on point and the crispy capers (!) a tasty surprise.

They need more staff to keep up with orders. We waited two hours to get our food because they had half the amount of chefs they usually have. Our waitress was clearly stressed and carrying the weight of it all. She handled it with class so we made sure to tip her significantly.

They always have unique items on the menu and whatever you select it is exquisite. The environment is warm and welcoming! Also, try the coffee, it is awesome!
