La Viola Bistro is open for both lunch and dinner during the week and dinner on weekends. A fine-dining establishment, it specializes in Italian fare. We were seated at 7:30 on a Thursday ahead of Labor Day weekend in the quieter and more formal bistro. It was VERY quiet. Very low music and maybe 1 other table seated. I think we would have preferred a more chic, lively vibe. The decor in the bistro is a tad out-dated, and you sort of feel like you have to whisper while talking but maybe this is because it was a Thursday ahead of a holiday weekend. The food, I will say, was unbelievable. We would go back for the food. We split two apps (calamari and a plate of mushrooms), ordered a pasta dish and their baby rack of lamb (probably the best I’ve had), and ordered tiramisu for dessert (so tasty!). It was all so, so good. And their bread comes out warm and I asked for a second basket to sop up the pasta sauce. And as a cash-only BYOB, it was so reasonably priced! I looked at the bill and was shocked. All of the staff were attentive and friendly. As we left, we noticed their other space across the street was more lively and we said when we come back (we certainly will for the food), we’d probably request that spot for a less formal vibe.

The service was the perfect combination of there (when you needed them) - and not there when you didn’t. I appreciated that. We sat outside, by my request, and it was great. I was, however, disappointed by the food. I had not been here since the mid-2000s but remember it being my absolute favorite BYOB. What I did not recall was having the dry, overcooked chicken like I did that night. And that sad bit of pasta served as a side with the every dish. I was disappointed by the food this time around, but loved the overall experience.

Loved the food, the atmosphere, and the service was excellent. This is classic Philadelphia. Look forward to coming back - had a great time. If you leave this place without a smile on your face, you should probably leave Phil as we don't need you here.

I wasn't aware that this place was cash only. Not a problem but it would be better to know going into the place.

A perfect after the Orchestra, or performance dining destination. The food was excellent, very friendly and efficient service. Unsophisticated, casual atmosphere. Because it’s a BYOB, the price was perfect. Will certainly return
