Khmai Cambodian is a culinary journey that celebrates rich heritage and indomitable spirit of Cambodia. Named as an homage to Khmer, the native language, Mai means mother, which pays homage to Chef's mother.
Our restaurant is a testament to the enduring bond between family and food.

Khmai Cambodian is Inspired by the childhood experiences of our founder, Mona Sang, and her mother, Sarom Sieng, who survived the Cambodian genocide, our menu pays tribute to their unwavering resilience and passion for cooking. As a James Beard Semifinalist for Best New Restaurant in 2023, Khmai Cambodian has earned acclaim for its commitment to preserving and showcasing the culinary treasures of Cambodia.

Also enjoy our new concept Kaun Khmai, where the spirit of Cambodia comes alive through bold flavors and vibrant experiences. Translating to "Children of Cambodia," our lively and casual atmosphere invites you to explore the innovative fusion of traditional Khmer street food with a generational twist.

The meal and the service felt uneven- there were dishes that were sold out, which was a massive disappointment. And the service was heavy handed- I’d try the restaurant out again, but would perhaps try the street food menu vs. the dine dining option.

This is a very special restaurant! The food is Cambodian, the flavors unique and delicious, the servings large. The atmosphere feels authentic. We had such a good time and this is one of my favorite restaurants.

Food was fantastic. So was the service. Waiter, Charley, gave perfect suggestions as it was our first time to a Cambodian restaurant. Will go again for sure

Ran out of several items, therefore limited experience. Food I tried was very salty. Also, ordered all at once and all the food came out rapidly. Felt rushed as restaurant cleared out about 915 for an 8 reservation. Not a great experience, food was average.

Our dinner was fabulous- the food and the service. Our server was extremely helpful in sorting out what to order and explaining the best ways to eat unfamiliar dishes. She packaged up our leftovers perfectly and never rushed us through our meal. Everything was very tasty and the meal was even more affordable than we expected. I highly recommend this restaurant!

One of my new favorite restaurants in Chicago. They have Cambodian Street Food on one side and more traditional Cambodian dishes on the other side of the restaurant. We had the Street Food and it was uniformly excellent. It shares some traits with Thai and Vietnamese food, but all of the dishes were unlike anything I had had in any other Southeastern Asian restaurant. The waitstaff and the management were very upbeat and helpful and our entire experience was excellent. We will be back soon.

One of the best dining experiences ever. The food is fabulous, the service is excellent and the atmosphere is perfect. I could not have asked for a better experience !

Pricey but extremely unique and the flavors will confuse your palate! Get the beef soup under the traditional section of the menu and the pork shoulder!
