Khmai Cambodian is a culinary journey that celebrates rich heritage and indomitable spirit of Cambodia. Named as an homage to Khmer, the native language, Mai means mother, which pays homage to Chef's mother.
Our restaurant is a testament to the enduring bond between family and food.

Khmai Cambodian is Inspired by the childhood experiences of our founder, Mona Sang, and her mother, Sarom Sieng, who survived the Cambodian genocide, our menu pays tribute to their unwavering resilience and passion for cooking. As a James Beard Semifinalist for Best New Restaurant in 2023, Khmai Cambodian has earned acclaim for its commitment to preserving and showcasing the culinary treasures of Cambodia.

Also enjoy our new concept Kaun Khmai, where the spirit of Cambodia comes alive through bold flavors and vibrant experiences. Translating to "Children of Cambodia," our lively and casual atmosphere invites you to explore the innovative fusion of traditional Khmer street food with a generational twist.

The food is absolutely exquisite and a rare delight. Service is warm and professional. The noise level in the fine dining section is louder than it should be though when they are busy. Could benefit from more noise-absorbing decor instead of all hard-surfaces. Other than that, Khmai is a gem!

We had the most wonderful experience. The food was absolutely phenomenal. The service was spot on every dish we tried was explained in detail. We will be going again.

Wonderful experience from the moment we walked in. Excellent & attentive servers helped guide us through a fantastic culinary experience. Can’t wait to go back to try more dishes and the new cocktail menu!

I continue to be impressed with Khmai. This is my 3rd time for dinner. The food is excellent and I am very impressed with the Cambodian style of sweet & spicy nuanced across the dishes. The host and staff were incredibly and authentically dressed. The service is attentive but not over whelming. I've brought high end business clients from Southeast Asia and they were very impressed. I've brought friends and family had a blast and my wife and I had a fancy date night. One of the best new restaurants in Chicago.

Our waitress suggested we order appetizers first then pick entrees later. Apps took a long time and to be honest we're very tasty.. The beef skewers were delicious, mango salad was very complex and even the egg rolls were surprisingly good. When we started seeing the staff clear up we asked the other staff and they said the kitchen was closed. They got our waitress who we hadn't seen since taking our app orders. She said she didn't realize what time it was and was having a rough day . A bit torn as the apps that we had were promising but left the place hungry. At least we had Boo n Grill just next door.

Wonderful food and wonderful service. My only disappointment was confusion when making a reservation online through OpenTable. I thought I was making a reservation for the fine dining side with a more comprehensive menu. It turned out that my reservation was for the casual dining side. I feel that this could have been made more clear in the app. I look forward to going back and trying the other side.
