Welcome to Josephine, a French brasserie located in the heart of Old Town Alexandria. Inspired by classic Parisian eateries, Josephine brings the timeless charm and culinary traditions of France to the local dining scene.
Josephine’s kitchen is helmed by Executive Chef Matt Cockrell, whose skilled approach is technique- and ingredient-focused, pairing with Josephine’s beverage program which is anchored by 350 French wines, 12 unique cocktails, and a focused selection of draft and bottled beer and cider rounds out the beverage program.
The ambiance at Josephine is warm and inviting, with antique millwork, vintage lighting (including pendants that once hung in the Paris Metro), and a large dining room overhung by a vaulted skylight. With 220 indoor seats, one of Old Town’s classic bars, a third-floor hideaway lounge and champagne bar (complete with fireplace), and an intimate courtyard seating 25, Josephine has space and setting for every occasion.

Had an excellent meal here. Steak tartare, beet salad, duck confit, steak frites and profiteroles were outstanding as was service and atmosphere.

As always, Josephine’s lived up to our expectations-and surpassed them! We started at the downstairs bar with cocktails. Then had dinner in the Atrium area where our server was fabulous! He was very professional and attentive! And we loved our food. Then we finished the evening upstairs at Bar Jo with a fun, very accommodating bartender and excellent drinks and dessert!! Thank you Josephine’s for having such well-trained and helpful staff!!

We went for a late lunch with a 245 booking. No where did it say the kitchen closed 15 minutes after arrival. The waiter pushed and pushed to get food out. Told us to walk out the patio because they were locking up. I felt rushed and an inconvenience. Bread for my dish took too long to come out so my mussels were already eaten. Some how had to get bread toast some unusual way as kitchen was done. So kitchen problems to blame yet again. It was so disappointing as when I booked there were all kinds of hours open even after this time. I did not see a limitation. THIS TERRIBLE limit should have been clearly explained. Or frankly stop taking reservations so waiters can hang out in restaurant and chat (what I saw ). Please just don’t take a reservation when you know it’s too much trouble for you. I’ve never see such a crazy situation.

The food is excellent. I usually order the Lyonnaise Salad which is delicious but I opted for their burger. It was outstanding. Everything I have gotten there has been great. The waitstaff are very thoughtful, helpful and go out of their way to make the meal enjoyable. Its one of our favorite places to eat and to take friends.

We went on a Saturday night and sat upstairs. It was fairly crowded which probably was the reason for the mediocre service. Our server tried I just think she was overwhelmed. The food is good; I just think it is a bit overpriced. A small portion of hanger steak and fries was $36 and a very average house salad was $15. The ambience upstairs is quite nice.
