I waited for the newness to wear off before coming to eat here and it was probably a bad idea. I came with my good friend and for appetizers we ordered the Pot Roast Empanadas & the jerk chicken tacos. I thought that the empanadas were underwhelming because I expected it to be hearty & filling and the filling was very much less than. The filling was so skimpy you tasted more dough than filling. Complete disappointment. The tacos shouldn’t have jerk in the name because there was no spice about them. The chicken was seasoned to taste sweet and the sauce was just salty. I truly enjoyed the Jolly Rancher drink was very good! My main course was “Jordyn’s Special” which was steak and lobster. I asked Sundai, our waitress which cut of steak it included and she gave me a confused look. I asked was it ribeye, since I saw it on the other side of the menu and she said yes! It came w/ 2 sides so I ordered the dressing and collard greens. Our food came out surprisingly quick! The dressing was weird. Very light in color and I saw no sautéed veggies Inside. It was just an ice cream scoop shaped ball of disgustingly DRY cornbread I guess. AWFUL. The greens weren’t terrible, just salty and I can tell they weren’t cooked w/ a nice seasoning blend. Just BLAH. The “steak” I’m not too sure it’s really steak. It had NO GRILL MARKS OR CHAR. It looked like a piece of meat that was thrown in an air fryer and parsley sprinkled on top. I tasted a corner of it and cut into the center and it was NOT MEDIUM WELL as I requested. It was really pink on the inside. By this time, I was fed up and asked Sundai for to go containers and the bill. My friend let me try her “smothered porkchops” which were big in size and tasted as if they were just fried w/ gravy poured on top. Not cooked to tender in the gravy which made me upset since I can cook and know what AUTHENTIC SOUL FOOD IS. THIS WAS NOT IT. Her mac & cheese was an over cheesed salty mess! Extremely disappointing.

My visit to Jordyn’s Soul Cafe was the perfect ending to my first visit to Chicago. The food and drinks were delicious and plentiful. But the icing on the cake was the incredible service provided by Fran. She was pleasant and attentive. She made some excellent menu suggestions and kept a laughter going at my table.

Unfortunately I had another bad experience at black owned establishment. The place is small and we had to wait over an hour for a table. The reservation was at 6:30 and was seated around 7:45. They did accommodate the extra person and gave us free shots. We had the spare ribs which were cooked the day before and catfish. The dressing and green beans were both salty. We ordered cornbread, but something happened in the kitchen and so we didn’t receive it.

So there was no bartender! Was told she called off ! The jerk chicken is baked and not spicy .. it’s really just baked chicken with sauce ! The fried green tomatoes were fire !!!! And the fried okra also ! They didn’t even have 1942 on the shelf ! They ok

Food was good and so was the service. The fried green tomatoes were amazing! Will definitely return. A little over priced for soul food but I guess that’s the going rate…

Very good service. Although it was busy and understaffed, they were very considerate and worked hard. I enjoy our Juneteenth outing.

First of all we ordered our food first and the table next to us received their food before us. Second we asked for our ribeye medium well it was sooo tough . Finally I questioned the automatic gratuity the server said it was a service fee I attempted to explain the difference she blew me off and said they charged 20% everywhere. I was expected to tip the waitress again and did not receive a receipt the bill was 124.86 with the 19.86 gratuity. A service fee should be stated in the beginning because she implied the service fee is split between staff and that is gratituty divided.
