A tale of two cities

Inspired by New York, 100 per cent Brum. Isaac's menu features American comfort food such as hot dogs, mac & cheese and cheesecake alongside brasserie classics including beef carpaccio, seafood platter and 30-day aged steaks. Dial things up for a blow-out occasion or dress down for casual dining: the choice is yours.

Our Chef, Adam Bateman has been knocking up New York sensations with us since we opened, and is proud to be a Brummy lad bringing the Big Apple buzz to our streets! Just across from Birmingham's famous Pigeon Park and a 10 minute walk to the gorgeous canals, we are the perfect place to grab a bite to eat when in Brum!

The restaurant walls and flooring are tiles, so it is loud. The menu is odd; not achieving the stated goal of invoking New York. The food is fine, service is spotty but polite. Our guests enjoyed their food, but it was hard to have a conversation.

First time at Issacs and it won't be the last. From arrival the staff were friendly and inviting and always on hand to answer questions. The food was tasty with generous portions. We will be back! Great Job Issacs!

My third visit to the restaurant and a ‘three out of five’ - on both of the other occasions I’d happily have given a five for everything. Yesterday’s visit seemed to be lacking the attention to detail and experience of my previous visits. Despite us having booked in advance the restaurant host seemed too busy to really welcome us - she was clearly distracted. Waiters and waitresses were very busy with no time to check on whether we needed fresh drinks or if everything was ok. The food was still good - though I enjoyed the steaks and fish on previous visits more than the burgers - and the room is beautifully appointed.

I visited Isaac’s restaurant last night with a few of my friends. The restaurant has real character and the interior is simply stunning. We were really excited to visit as it has been on our list for a while. Unfortunately our backs were put up instantly when we walked through the doors and member of staff stood and looked at us and said “yes?” I replied with a greeting and explained that we had a table booked for 4. It was 5:30 so the restaurant was quiet but it seemed like our arrival was of extreme inconvenience to him. A few dirty looks after, he showed us to our table. We acknowledged that he could just be having an off day. This was until we were served by two other female servers who were just as unwelcoming and moody as him. It was a real shame because the food was great and we loved the restaurant itself but the staff made us feel so uncomfortable that I doubt we would recommend Isaac’s to anyone. I know this should not make any difference, but we were dressed well, behaved in an appropriate manner and were just a normal bunch of friends out for a meal, but for some reason the staff took a real disliking to us. It was that or they simply do not like working in hospitality.

Really wasn’t happy with the service, been here a few times and brought my friend as I raved about it! The waitress we had was so cold and really quite rude to be honest. Took ages to serve us, seemed everything was too much trouble for her. I asked for a straw as I was struggling with extreme toothache, she walked by the straws and instead of running one over quickly, went to clear another table away and I had to ask again. The drinks took ages, a table that came in after us had the drinks before us. When I mentioned this, no apology just a cold response. I had to ask again where the drinks were.

It was all a bit meh. Deal not explained to us. I had to ask about my booking and we were still charged for 2 wines . This was not explained at time of ordering. The staff have more knowledge of the deals than me, I felt that they capitalised on this. We ordered extras for starters and wine etc so it's not like we were willing to spend They did give me the table I asked for though. It was all just a bit meh.

Enjoyed our dinner, great to have a menu with more inventiveness than a standard hotel menu. Very friendly staff.

Friendly efficient staff and lovely ambience with tiled floor and walls and some nice plants too! Lighting just right both from ceiling and on tables. Had the very tasty half lobster in garlic butter! They also did me some very tasty (off menu) mushrooms!! Restaurant in 4 star Grand Hotel next to Cathedral and well worth a visit!
