Opened in 2011, Indigenous has earned a reputation for being an inspirational and educational restaurant. For years, Indigenous has been known as one of America’s top restaurants, renowned for its passion for food, the community, and the planet. Indigenous’ menu of seasonal American cuisine changes progressively throughout the year based on peak ingredient availability. With a focus on sustainable seafood, we work closely with local fisherman, artisans, and farmers to maintain the highest quality. At Indigenous, we are always working our best to create a better food system. Owner Chef Steve Phelps has been a James Beard Foundation Semi Finalist for Best Chef South in 2014 & 2015, an Ambassador for Monterey Bay Aquarium Seafood Watch Blue Ribbon Task Force, and a founding member and Chef for the EDF Coalition for Sustainable Aquaculture.

Beautiful setting, cute neighborhood and lovely ambiance EXCEPT the music was too loud! Our waitress was knowledgeable and attentive— much appreciated. We enjoyed her descriptions and recommendations. OMG the Parmesan beignets are incredible and the roasted mushrooms sublime as appetizers. We ordered a variety of mains including the pistachio falafels, burger, cobia fish and shrimp. Dessert was the panna cotta and ice cream with butterscotch magic shell— awesome! BTW I mixed up our reservation time but they were gracious and accommodating about it. Highly recommend and we will return!

Easily the top restaurant in Sarasota. I could eat here every week and never get bored; the menu constantly changes. They are truly cooking up masterpieces. A+

For this, our fourth or fifth dinner at Indigenous in the past year, one of our three favorite downtown Sarasota pre-theater restaurants, we had another great meal. The pickled vegetables appetizer were as good as ever and both my swordfish entree and my wife’s greens salad were truly excellent. The only hiccup was that although we were promptly seated at 6:10pm, our food wasn’t served until 6:50pm, which was rather stressful since our theater tickets were for a show at 7:30pm. Fortunately, we made the show just in time so everything worked out, so we’ll just write off the unusually slow service as the typical holiday business rush.

We think Indigenous offers the very best food in Sarasota, and we dine there every time we are in town. It is a charming chef-driven restaurant offering creative dishes using the finest available local ingredients. Regrettably, we visited on New Years Eve for an expensive fixed price dinner, and the kitchen just could not seem to deliver on the main course. We finally skipped it altogether and moved on to the dessert course. To compensate, they bought the last round of drinks, hardly adequate for the unusual fail. We look forward to a better experience next time.

We’ve eaten at Indigenous a few times and consider it a favorite in Sarasota. However, something was off last night. In particular the two fish preparations — the cobia, which was not well served by a bland base of “chowder” and oddly paired jicama, and especially the undercooked salmon with an unfortunate medley of bitter-tasting root vegetables, an offering the waiter pushed hard — were disappointing. There was no brightness — citrus anyone? Serving the fish pate in a jelly jar — wasn’t that a thing ten years ago — made it hard to retrieve and the green curry wasn’t much in evidence; my husband characterized this appetizer as flavorless. On the other hand, the mushroom soup was its usual good self and the bottle of Chablis excellent. We came away feeling that it is time to explore other restaurants rather than relying on Indigenous for great food.
