Il Totano is a contemporary Southern Italian restaurant, focusing on pristine seafood, fresh crudo & house-made pastas. We are a casual fine dining restaurant that focuses on excellent food, service and beverage. Come say hi and have a great time with us!

Il Totano has the potential to be a very good restaurant, but has quite a ways to go. Overbooked, overcrowded, more than 20 minute uncomfortable wait for our table despite reservation. Sound level was deafening (they say that they are waiting for soundproofing material to be installed). Staff was courteous but service was slow and inconsistent. Food was very good when it arrived. Hopefully this is just a case of a new restaurant needing time to find its stride. Will probably give it another try if and when they get the sound level under control.

Noise level in back dining room was extreme and we had to move outside so we could hear each other and converse.

My husband and I were amazed by the presentation, flavors and the creativity involved in each dish we ordered. The staff could not be better, and we so appreciated the hostesses, our waiter, Ben, and Katherine. We will be back!

Actually expected a lot more from the chef that made perilla a staple in the west village. The crudos all three of them were very good, the pastas were a mix of very good and blahh, The linguini con bingo le was very good just a tad salty, the ragú pasta was normal, and the pasta with crab meat the tomatoes sauce overwelmed the favour of the crab meat Finally the pork milanesa was way way to dry, pitty The tiramisú was def a tira mi su, excellent

Everything was delicious and the portions are decent but definitely need an appetizer and a main dish to be satiated. The drinks, music and ambiance was perfect for a birthday dinner. Look forward to going back

Food is good, service is good, but the noise level is so extremely loud. This is not “oh it’s busy, it’s bustling, it’s lively” loud. It’s literally impossible to hear the person across from you. It’s distracting from the experience and the food, unfortunately.

For those who lament the closing of Harold Dieterle's previous restaraunt Perilla, the opening of Il Totano will prove that the passing of time hasn't exaggerated your memory. His food was, and remains, that good, rapurously wonderful. Service was excellent, with waiters very attentive and efficient. There were also a number of extra folks (floor managers, maybe) randomly wandering the dining area keeping an eye on things -- not engaging with diners, but adjusting the placement of a napkin or table setting. I'm not sure if the quality of service was due to that extra level of managerial scrutiny, but there's no denying the service was excellent. The space is small, which means it's cacophonous; this ain't the place for quiet conversation. The decor is fine, if a bit ambiguous -- sea-blue walls, seashell sconces, mushroom-shaped table lamps, -- that, depending on your mood either invoke the Italian seacoast of its menu or something like a come-to-life Super Mario Bros. game (the cocktails are named after Saturday morning cartoon characters after all...) In any case, the place is a wonderful addition to the neighborhood, and a wonderful return to NYC restauranting for Harold Dieterle.
