Il Gabbiano is an Italian Steakhouse brought to the historical waterfront district and neighborhood of the city of New Haven, Connecticut by Chef Valentino Stakaj owner of the city's iconic Adriana's on Grand Avenue and La Lupa in North Haven, Valentino has rebuilt the famous restaurant location at 501 Long Wharf Drive which overlooks the Long Island Sound. Monday to Sunday happy hour from 2-6pm drink and appetizer specials every day.

    The musician was good quality, though too loud for our table, which was very close to the speakers. It was quite unpleasant before we spoke up. I do not understand the overabundant size of the portions. Each dish, appetizer, salad and entree was large enough for two full portions. Quality of the food and service was excellent.

    We had a 7:30 reservation for a birthday celebration and got seated right away. We were brought over bread and olives almost immediately but that was it. Nobody came by and finally at 8 :00 we got up and left.  We told the hostess when we were leaving what happened. She was more worried about how it happened than trying to take care of us. She should’ve asked us to stay and said have a drink on us or an appetizer. Instead she apologized and told us to have a good night. This was our fourth time there and we’ve always had good service. Not sure what happened tonight.

     The ambience is great, large portions of very delicious food expect to have to go containers. The owner Valentino takes pride and all his restaurants.

    I had Cesar salad, salmon & NY cheesecake. My friend has eggplant rollatini, salmon & tiramisu, All very good except the mixed veggies on the entree! The broccoli was dried out/burnt. Service was slow to start & then p/up! The waiter was very nice. The outside of the building was drab but inside quite lovely!! We ate outside….very nice!

    Atmosphere is nice, food was fine. There were 5 of us there for dinner and the restaurant was not busy at all. Two meals were served but the other three meals were not served for at least 10 (maybe fifteen) minutes. One person's pasta was very undercooked but the waiter didn't return to check on everything until we were almost done eating. The waiter did end up getting another serving of pasta for my mother to take home but it would have been much preferred had all meals come out at the same time and then the waiter checked in immediately after the food was delivered to see if everything was to our satisfaction. Overall, it was not a good experience.

    The salmon was undercooked. I didn't realize until the next day when I was so sick. I remember I had to cut it. 2 of my adult children are chefs, and that's the first thing they asked me, "Ma, did you have to cut it?" Don't get me wrong I've been there before and it's an excellent restaurant and I might go there again but it'll take me some time because of what I went through.

    Waiter brought our entrees when we were 1/2 way thru our apps. Said it’s ok to take our time? Lobster and shrimp special had no noticable lobster in it. Heard mixed reviews before going - probably won’t go back.

    We had a party of fifteen for our Aunt's 90th surprise birthday party. Everything was extraordinary -- the food, the service, and the ambience of the outdoor patio. The portions were beyond generous and the food simply delicious! I eat out a LOT and I am hard pressed to think of another experience so perfect on every level! The birthday luncheon was beautiful. I live in L.A. and my family in CT. We're already planning our next visit to Il Gabbiano when I come back. I know they'll be back before my next visit for sure. I can't recommend enough. Thank you for making our Aunt's birthday so memorable!!
