Wow, what an amazing experience! The Valentine’s decorations and ambiance were absolutely stunning. We usually go to this restaurant for dim sum almost every weekend, but this was our first Valentine’s celebration there. The rose was such a sweet surprise for my wife, and the service and food were just as great as always. Exceptional experience! The Valentine’s decoration and ambiance exceeded expectations. We had the crab and lobster vermicelli dishes that were superb. The new decor is very cozy and the wait staff are friendly, knowledgeable, and attentive. They also have dim sum at dinner. What a wonderful restaurant. (We love the Joan Dui conceived by Princess Jing.) Hom Sui Gok and Gai Lan

Food was ok…waiter didn’t offer any Chinese new year options to us, didn’t realize there was a set menu…and he didn’t mention there were different sizes to the dishes we ordered (until I noticed the bill mentioning “small” dishes. I had to ask for the red bean desserts at the end, and never had to do that before because restaurants like these would offer it up to us. Service was super slow and we had to really ask for attention to order extra dishes (since the dishes we got were so small) and we had to ask for the dessert menu. When we got the rice and noodle dishes, they didn’t come with bowls which should be standard. I would say it’s an ok option if convenience to Emeryville is a priority.

Great dim sum! On my first visit today to Hong Kong East Ocean, I had the best pork bow I've ever had. Fluffy bread and a delicious filling. The other dishes were also good.

Unfortunately service was not good and although we had a reservation, we were seated in the very back corner of the restaurant behind a pillar. We felt ostracized for the most of the meal when we clearly saw other tables being helped with efficiency. The pillar we were behind obstructed the view of the servers and resulted in us having to flag people down multiple times just to get their attention for service. We had to ask for rice twice, it didn’t arrive until we had already finished half of the meal. We also thought it was odd when a large group of service staff sat down in the tables next to us (again we were seated in the back of the restaurant) and started eating their employee break meals casually and quite loudly. It felt like we were thrown into the back break room with the staff. I’m 100% supportive for employees enjoying their meals, they deserve it! But it took away from the actual experience as a paying customer whose goal was to have a nice meal out on a Friday night at a nice restaurant. The soup dumplings were also dry and shriveled, not fresh and no soup inside. That was disappointing. The spicy chicken and Mongolian beef were better. Loved the crispy shrimp balls. Portions were ok, I just wish the service and quality was better.
