Blending classic East Coast culinary traditions with a modern Californian sensibility, Herb & Sea is Chef Brian Malarkey’s venerable companion restaurant to the much-loved Herb & Wood in Little Italy. Quickly becoming one of the most sought-after tables in town, the concept shines with a menu that focuses on simple, clean, bright flavors. Located steps from Moonlight Beach in Encinitas, the vibrant space is housed in a 1920’s art deco building that has been restored to its original glory.

Daily operations are helmed by Executive Chef Aidan Owens. The menu includes a mix of raw bar staples, fresh seafood, meat dishes, and roasted vegetables. A variety of pizzas and pastas round out the offerings, alongside dessert and a dedicated kids’ menu.

First time here and we were not disappointed. We had the fennel sausage pizza, roasted chicken, hush puppies, and caramel cream puffs. Everything was delicious. The service was attentive and prompt. We will definitely return.

Upon arriving with a reservation on a Wednesday evening for my significant other’s birthday, we were greeted by a less than enthusiastic and very rude hostess who was dismissive and impolite. There were several open tables and we requested to sit somewhere away from the front door and to have a table where we could sit next to one another. This seemed like a major inconvenience so we asked kindly to speak to a manager who was also unable to accommodate our request. During our meal, only 3 tables were sat so it seemed a bit off-putting that our request to be able to sit together on the same side of the table was not fulfilled. Overall, the server was ok, just going through the motions but pleasant. Our food was presented well and fresh, but we may reconsider going back as our overall experience was subpar. Bummer as we are locals and were really looking forward to a better experience last night.

Food was fantastic as always! Waited a long time for drinks, then to place the food order and in between courses. Dinner for 2 (drinks, two apps, two mains) took a full two hours. Didn’t seem to be at full capacity, but maybe they were understaffed.

Meh. Last minute choice for my wife's birthday. Seated at a nice table and ordered $177 bottle of champagne only to be poured into white wine glasses. Later the manager came by the table and asked if we would like more wine poured from the bottle in the ice bucket. The beef carpaccio was thinly sliced but no flavor - no oil or capers - really needed salt. Lamb meatballs were tasty - moist and just enough pepper - pomegranate seeds were a nice touch. The caesar salad was tasty esp the crispy skin pieces. The fennel sausage pizza was way too salty. Could not finish it. Then for after dinner drinks ordered two $75 drinks. Not sure they were actually one ounce but was worth it. The complimentary birthday ice cream was outstanding. For total bill over $550 would say the overall experience was average. In retrospect should have gone to Rare Society.
