Blending classic East Coast culinary traditions with a modern Californian sensibility, Herb & Sea is Chef Brian Malarkey’s venerable companion restaurant to the much-loved Herb & Wood in Little Italy. Quickly becoming one of the most sought-after tables in town, the concept shines with a menu that focuses on simple, clean, bright flavors. Located steps from Moonlight Beach in Encinitas, the vibrant space is housed in a 1920’s art deco building that has been restored to its original glory.

Daily operations are helmed by Executive Chef Aidan Owens. The menu includes a mix of raw bar staples, fresh seafood, meat dishes, and roasted vegetables. A variety of pizzas and pastas round out the offerings, alongside dessert and a dedicated kids’ menu.

    Truly amazing food!!! Loved the mussel toast the best. Halibut was perfect. Best Caesar salad i’ve ever had at a restaurant. It’s expensive, but the experience was fabulous.

    From start to finish, we walked in , got our table right away. Our server Nick was supper helpful in introducing us to the new dishes and was prompt with drinks. We did get there around 6pm so the dinner rush was just about to get going, are we were still well taken care of. The food was very good and locally sourced dished were DLISH! Well Done Nick!

    love the menu, the chicken fried fish, etc. but too noisy, accentuated by polished concrete floors and by unnecessary useless "music" not enough serving staff too

    Unfortunately, our overall dining experience at Herb & Sea was disappointing. Having dined at Herb & Sea last summer for an anniversary dinner, and having had a great experience, we decided to take two long-time friends out for a lovely meal. As we were seated, we requested Herb & Sea’s delicious home-baked Parker Rolls. We were informed that these yummy gems had been discontinued. They are re-imagining this department the manager said. Once seated, we immediately noticed that the background music was much too loud; the musical vibe, not at all relaxing. Hearing our conversations was difficult. In addition, the restaurant, in attempting to create ambiance, was so dark one could not read the menu without the aid of a cellphone flashlight. Our service, from beginning to end was extremely slow and spotty. The menu was limited and everything was ala carte. Our entrees took an exorbitant amount of time to arrive. Our four entrees did not arrive at the same time. After three entrees finally arrived, our friend had to wait additional time for hers. Our side dishes, the potatoes and roasted whole carrots (each side, enough for four people) which should have been served with our entrees, arrived much later, well after we had begun our entrees. The potatoes arrived first, then quite a while later, our carrots were served. The potatoes were piping hot, but a little tough. The carrots were cooked perfectly, served hot, and the seasonings were delicious. My entree, the fillet, cooked medium-rare as requested, unfortunately arrived at room temperature. I was hungry so I did not send it back. My husband’s organic chicken, which we enjoyed last summer, was overly seasoned, and much too spicy. Herb & Sea is a visually lovely restaurant, with a delightful beach vibe. Their menu however is limited and expensive. Last night’s service and food quality was very disappointing. The chef and kitchen team need to work on this.

    We spent New Year’s Eve at Herb and Sea and it was an outstanding experience. The food was excellent, with every dish crafted to perfection, and the surprise serving of caviar added an elegant touch to the evening. The service was very good, with attentive staff ensuring that our needs were met promptly. Overall, the ambiance and culinary delights made for a memorable evening, deserving a 4.5-star rating.

    Food was fair overall, duck and prime rib were way overcooked. That said, prawns were outstanding and desert was very good. Host seemed disinterested in our opinion after she asked how the meal was saying we will take your comments in consideration for next time. Overall just OK

    The pace of service was way too fast. It felt like they wanted to turn tables, almost no time between courses. Otherwise the food was very good and the server was very attentive and friendly.
