We are a Laotian restaurant in the heart of the neighborhood of Shaw. Baan Mae means Mom's house in Laotian. Chef Seng of Thip Khao and Padaek is serving up dishes reminiscent of her home kitchen and her mother's kitchen.

Mom's House Reservation Policy:

All reservations are allowed a 15-minute grace period.

All parties must be present at the restaurant to be seated. If parties are incomplete by the end of the 15-minute grace period, the reservation may be moved to the waitlist upon the completion of the party.

Reservation wait times may be impacted in the case of rain or heat advisory as we will do our best to accommodate patio reservations indoors.

Due to our limited seating capacity, all reservations are limited to a maximum of 90-minute seating time and 2 hours for large parties of 5+.

This was one of the best meals that three of us have had in years! I can’t say enough about it. We had the tapioca dumplings, the shaved banana blossom jicama salad, Argentinian shrimp with basil sauce, fried catfish and chicken from the pop up menu and the noodles with pork dumplings. The Leaf Me Alone cocktail was an amazing blend of lettuce, lime, mango, mezcal and tequila and super delicious! And I can’t leave out the amazing dessert that had a creamy caramelized base with lumps of pumpkin and small rice balls stuffed with a peanut with pumpkin seeds on top. So original! You must try it! The service was fabulous as well with two servers willing to explain the menu.

Incredibly expensive and unsatisfying. The pork chasu lettuce cups we ordered were sad grey blobs that seemed so undercooked we didn't eat them - event the lettuce was not a good kind for lettuce cups. The yellow curry was okay, if not uninteresting, and the shrimp crudite was flavorless and slimy. That would not have been so offensive if the check had not come out to $100 for 2 people/2.5 dishes!!!! Not only that, but despite copious staff we ended up frequently waiting for service and the ambiance was generally lacking. Unfortunately this is a skip for me.

The pumpkin curry was simply the best curry dish I’ve ever had. I have been thinking about it for the past 24 hours and still can’t quite believe it was real. Overall best meal in DC.

Great food. Good service. There was only one server for the entire restaurant so the service was a bit slow. Highly recommended it!

located in a charming Shaw store front house, the interior was inviting with interesting original paintings of the "Monkey God & his servants." Service was great, waitress friendly and very helpful. Bronzino w/rice, a (raw) shrimp starter, and a drink -- total cost was around $60, I was hungry when I left. The portions were very small so I would not consider it a very good deal. The menu was exotic (at least to me) so perhaps that explains the high cost. My dinner partner complained that there were not pictures of the food on the menu which would have made it easier for him to pick something for dinner.

The food at Baan Mae is amazing, but I would recommend sitting inside!

Superb food and a very nice relaxed vibe. Lots of flavors and unique menu items. Seating is very limited. We reserved a seat at the bar which was very comfortable. Probably not a great choice for a large (5+) group sine there are only two tables for 4 indoors (They close the patio during inclement weather)…. Great place for a date tho…
