Gwen Butcher Shop & Restaurant is the second restaurant from fine dining chef Curtis Stone (of Maude) and the first he’s opened with his brother Luke Stone. Gwen is both a European-style, chef-driven butcher shop and a restaurant that is redefining dining in LA, with a menu that calls on fire-based cooking techniques. Whether you’re picking up house-made charcuterie, prime and rare breed meats from the retail store, enjoying a feast in the dining room or relaxing with a bite and cocktail at the bar, Gwen delivers the highest standards of quality, taste and service.

On Wednesdays-Sundays, we offer Chef's Carte Blanche 5-course tasting menu for $130 per person (limited quantities available). Food seemed to be overly salted across the board. Bread and butter were the star dishes which is surprising. Service was slow, reservation was at 7:45 and we didn’t leave until about 10. Seats are slightly uncomfortable and lean forward. Drinks were strong which was appreciated but mint seemed to be the only garnish which is odd in a mai tai. Charcuterie was very good, bread and butter were very good, drinks were decent. Steak was underwhelming, desert was a little bland and the lobster rice was wet bordering soupy. All in all I likely wouldn’t sit through the traffic to go back.

Our party had the Chef's tasting menu. Great way to explore the menu by having a little bit of every part of the menu. 5 Courses in total. We did at our servers suggestion add a couple of sides to make the steak course feel more like an full plated meal. We all said we'd come back!

The service was excellent with staff being very helpful about food and wine selection. We were not rushed and made to feel a valued customer. We were very satisfied with our selections, both quality and quantity. Gwen was a tremendous dining experience!

This was one of the best experiences we have had. Our first time at a Michelin star restaurant and now I understand the attention to detail, quality of food and service was outstanding. One of the best New York strips I’ve ever had both in flavor and texture, perfectly cooked. The lobster rice was very unique with a great umami taste. It was my first time trying beef tartare and it was delicious. Our servers were wonderfully friendly with just the right amount of attention. A very wonderful experience. Chef Stone has created a delicious experience.

After the show, we headed back to Gwen for dinner, and it shows why it is a Michelin star restaurant. From the appetizers to the perfectly cooked steak, the food was just as exceptional as I remembered. A bottle of Penfolds complemented the meal beautifully, pairing wonderfully with dishes like the duck speck, beef tartare, and liver mousse, as well as the steak. The restaurant’s ambiance is stunning, the service impeccable, and the recommended dessert was a perfect finish to the evening. #gwen

TEPID in all ways...We were anxiously awaiting our reservation at Gwen for its Michelin star and best LA Steak house review posted on Gwen's Instagram page. Needless to say, we were very disappointed. Starting with a 20 minute wait for cocktails and 30 mins for bread. Our waiter was nice enough and as foodies we followed his menu suggestions with starters of beef tartare (very salty), liver mouse (again over salted), chicory salad (good but overpowered by anchovy.) Despite the nice touches of presenting knife selections in a wooden box, these elements one would expect with a restaurant at this price point and purported caliber, such as changing dishes with each course, and plate descriptions upon presentation, the food was tepid and banal at best. For entrees we ordered the New York Strip which came warm, the Pork Chop (best of all items we ordered, besides the bread) , Leeks (underwhelming), Mushrooms (fine) and highly recommended Duck Fat Potatoes (again warm and soft at best, despite being served in cast iron in which one would expect crispy and hot off the fire. For dessert we ordered the Lemon Tarts and Banana Pudding, which was somewhat redemptive but at that point, our party just wanted to be done. We have loved Curtis Stone's Maude and have been many times over the years...needless to say we wont be returning.

I would not recommend. We went on a Friday night and service was extremely slow. Tables pushed close together which afforded little privacy and created a loud atmosphere. When the food did arrive the dishes were underwhelming with largely flavorless sauces. Extremely disappointed given the high expectations and prices
