Guu Original on Thurlow is where the Izakaya boom started. It’s not only the first Guu to open, but is the very first Izakaya in Vancouver.

Established in 1993 as “Raku” & changed to “Guu” in 2000, this Guu offers the most authentic Izakaya experience, offering classic dishes like Yaki Udon & Oden. This is as close you’ll get to the real deal….unless you fly to Japan.


We keep seats for walk-in customers as well. No available seats on OpenTable do not mean we are fully booked. Please be aware that the time-limited per table is two hours during peak hours.

    Always an amazing time at guu, the food is consistently good as well as the service! Been coming here for a few years now and I’ve yet to have a bad time.

    Sashimi salad was decent. The lamb was tough and salty.The Yaki Udon was not edible as they put too much salt/ sot sauce. We have been to Guu in the last 15 years abd this probably our worst experience.

    Food was so good… so tasty and filling. Highly recommend this place. It was recommended to me and o pass it on. Great energy from the staff. Felt like I was in Tokyo

    service was excellent all staffs were courteuous and attentive. food tho, as a regular, i feel like this time wasnt the best. i usually order off of daily special but the selection wasnt too good.

    The staff at Guu on Thurlow go above and beyond to ensure their guests a spectacular experience! The food remains scrumptious and the service is attentive without the robotic tempo found in other establishments. A rousing rendition of Happy Birthday brought immense joy to the birthday girl. Heartfelt thanks for the wonderful energy and enthusiasm.

    Sitting at the counter at Guu is always fun. The menu and ambience are very much like being in Japan. Good value in these times of crazy-high restaurant prices.
