Heritage pub turned Greek Islands-inspired paradise, Golden Fleece Hotel has brought Santorini to South Melbourne.

Entering off Montague Street, you’ll find curvaceous, stone-look tables, booths and walls (with alcoves filled with ornate vases and ceramics, and all sorts of cacti). There’s also an adjoining bottle shop where the walls are lined with vino you can take away. A level up the colourful mosaic-tiled stairwell is a darker, moodier space with jet-black booths (contrasting against flashes of red brick), as well as a pool table and DJ booth.

The rooftop is where you’ll feel most transported, as the sun beams down on the same kind of stone-look surrounds as on the ground level. Sip a fun Ouzo Sour, or a salty Mykonos Margarita to feel the holiday vibes.

The menu is similarly Mediterranean. Among the highlights: locally sourced Octopus terrine, fluffy fish-roe dip, salt-and-pepper calamari, and a delicious Yia-Yias style Moussaka.

I can’t rave about the service we received enough! The wait/bar staff were wonderful and did everything in their power to make our outing a memorable one. Their customer service was exceptional and they went above and well beyond to exceed our expectations. The decor was beautiful, drinks and food were soooo delicious with really generous portion sizes. But ultimately it was the incredible warm friendly and helpful customer service received that just absolutely blew us away. We will definitely be coming back!

Had a great lunch upstairs and the surroundings were quite relaxed. We enjoyed a number of mezzes and souvlakis and could have just stuck with the mezzes. Will definitely be back

First time we had been to the this restaurant/pub and we really liked it. The space is great, especially the outdoor area upstairs. Food was good. We will go back

We found a great place for traditional Greek food that was all we hoped for. The food was delicious and we could not have gone anywhere better.

We loved the restaurant. The fit out is amazing. The food was very tasty, but we did eventually find it very intense and salty. We ordered several mezze to share, but eventually found it all very intense. Great flavours, great presentation, great service generally. We found their fabric sling chairs very uncomfortable eventually. Even the younger ones amongst us were uncomfortable. We also found our table very high ... 100-150mm too high, so we felt like kids at the big table. It became uncomfortable with our elbows up in the air to eat. I'll go again, but I'll be very certain to specify a normal table and normal chairs. And I don't think we'd try pool again there. We played pool upstairs which was fun, but three out of four pool cues did not have felt tips, and one was actually split. Two balls were missing from a muddled set, so it was not really possible to have a game. The DJ in the same room was blasting music within 2 metres of the table ... so it wasn't possible to laugh and talk at all.

Saturday just passed, our family booked a special lunch at Santorini in The Golden Fleece Hotel in South Melb, VIC. There were 11 of us ranging from 18months to grandparents. We were offered the "bottle room" at the front of the hotel ground floor. Skye was our customer service attendee and she was excellent. A warm, friendly personality while also totally professional. Skye made sure orders for drinks, entrees and food for the children were taken & delivered promptly. This attentive, quality service continued throughout the entire meal. Skye interacted with us all, especially taking time with the children, who all loved her. She took time to discuss shared meal options and her advice on food choices was spot on. Nothing was too much trouble for Skye. She is up there with the best service provider we have experienced- and we dine out locally a lot. The shared food - dips, house baked bread, saganaki, taramasalata, chicken and lamb souvlaki, patates lemonates, and horiatiki salads, all were excellent and well recommended! We will return.
