This was a mixed experience. Lots of hype around restaurant. Drinks are amazing. So delicious. Appetizers were grand. Foie Gras excellent, bone marrow and crab also great, although a bit strange pairing on the marrow. Wild boar entree delicious. Pension papparadelle not so great. Too much going on with the goat cheese, pesto, and the venison ragu lacked flavor. Not the best. The low rating was largely because service was terrible. Must be understaffed but with so many choices in Halifax, they need to up their game.

We were given a warm welcome upon arriving at the restaurant and seated quickly. The restaurant was appropriately lit and the tables were nicely spaced. Our server was attentive of our needs and was able to address special dietary requests. The appetizer and main courses were delicious. It was a wonderful evening and we highly recommend Gio.

The beef tenderloin medium rare was cooked perfectly and held so much flavour. The potato pave also stood out to me as an option I would recommend to others looking for a good side with the tenderloin.

Our waitress was very helpful and attentive all night. Please send her our thanks. She also made great recommendations for our meal. She was very knowledgeable about the menu. She went out of her way to give us the service we got. In fact, for dessert, I did not want something sweet and mentioned to her it was a pity that a cheese board was not on the menu. She assured me she could arrange that and did. The cheeseboard was excellent and even included hummus and tsatziki. Great value too at only $16. Would definitely recommend.

We visit Halifax annually to see family & friends & eat out regularly here but this was our first time in Gio. The aperitifs were very good, the various appetizers- foie gras, salads, snapper,duck confit & in house baked sour dough bread were a delicious start of our meal. Mains were scallop & shrimp, Spanish mackerel ( best sweet potatoes & leek I’ve ever had),perfectly cooked wild boar, halibut & chips which were actually small slightly smashed potatoes done in duck fat -yum!-& a very tasty mixed vegetable & bean dish. What we all noticed was that the portions were exactly the right size, whether appetizer or main, which meant we could all have 3 courses & so we’re able to try a lot of the small well thought out seasonal menu. We 5 shared 3 desserts & we’re still trying to decide which was the best as all the components were very good individually. Blueberry ice cream? Maybe tofu & chocolate gâteau? Or strawberry ice cream??? We found the prices were absolutely acceptable for food of this high quality. The cocktails are imaginative & varied & the prices for all the drinks & wine were fair. We had the NZ Te Awa Sauvignon Blanc not only because we’re fans of New World wines but also because our delightful server recommended it- she’s originally from there. Molly was delightful: attentive but discreet, extremely knowledgeable about everything on the menu, preparation of dishes, able to size up & chat with each individual at the table with humour & intelligence. She was the highlight of our evening & we’re so happy we had this experience on our last night in Halifax. Thank you to the kitchen, the bar & especially to Molly. We look forward to our next trip & will be sure to come by again & try the new dishes on the menu.

Healthy portions. Delicious meals. Setting could probably be spruced up, but good food made up for it.
