The 1740 General Stanton Inn was named best new restaurant in Southern Rhode Island. Guests delight in traditional Rhode Island cuisine with emphasis on fresh local seafood-- Oysters, clams, calamari, swordfish, shrimp, scallops and our signature dish, Portuguese Cod. Our friendly bartenders excel at making Martinis, Old fashioneds and craft cocktails. Local craft beers are on draft, and the wine list is comprehensive.

Located in the beach community of Charlestown, Rhode Island, The General Stanton is the quintessential New England Inn with charming colonial architecture which dates back to the 1700's. The Inn is rich in history having hosted George Washington and three US Presidents. The Inn was a stagecoach stop, underground railroad safehouse and an illicit gambling house in the roaring 1920's.

First time at General Stanton Inn and we both wanted the Prime Rib special. Although we were the first to be seated, we were offered a very poor seating choice. Turned it down and we received another poor choice for a table. Why does a hostess try to give the early arrivals the worst tables? Wine and cocktail were fine and I had the French Onion soup. Good, but I didn’t have time to finish before the Prime Rib arrived. Nice cuts, cooked as requested, with 2 sides. Mashed potatoes were skimpy and the broccoli was satisfactory. $42.00 for a prime rib! No dessert but the wife had a chocolate martini which was a good one. Overall, a fine meal but it was the little things that could have been better!

The service was very friendly, but slow (under/staffed). The appetizer (Calamari) was good, the three entrees were mediocre, the dessert (Gelato) was good. The prices were high enough that better service and food should be expected.

Dinner on Saturday evening was great. Our server was wonderful and the food was fabulous. I am a big fan of the General Stanton Inn. I bring many visitors there!

We went to try it out based on reviews on open table. It turns out we loved the place. The food was excellent with a good wine selection. The service was very pleasant and the history was exiting. It made our top list of favorite restaurants. We will definitely be returning.

We are regular customers and always have a great experience. We’ve really worked our way through the menu, and everything is delicious. Appetizer favorites are the crispy Brussels sprouts and the calamari…both great for sharing at the table. The black sea bass special was wonderful, as are the seafood items regularly on the menu. The swordfish and tuna are especially good. If you’re in the mood for beef, the steak frites is excellent. Service is always terrific!

We have been here before and had a good experience and delicious food. Last night we had reservations at 5:30 and were seated in a corner of the tavern promptly by the hostess. We waited 15 minutes, no waitstaff approached us, until I spoke with a young lady who was pouring water and asked if we have a waitress. She said she would check and a nice woman appeared and was apologetic about not knowing we were there. Clearly a lack of communication between the staff members. We did advise the manager when we left and he apologized as well. If you do go please make sure they are aware that you are there. If I hadn't said anything we could have waited a lot longer. Hope this doesn't happen again.
