General Public is inspired by trying to imagine what an upscale English pub would be if it had the heart of an American brasserie (and was open 11 to 11). It’s also going to signal a little bit of steakhouse, but not too much. And finally, it will look behind itself at the Black Hoof, which you will see reflected in James Santon’s menu here and there. In terms of vibe, the main floor is ‘everything’s gone green’, with lush comfortable banquette seating, warm wood, and barstools designed for long conversations over many cocktails. Upstairs you’ll find a completely different space that transports you to a peachy 80s dream. Somehow these two halves make perfect sense, and complement each other in a seamless conversation, where neither wins the argument, but you really do have to see it! See you soon!

Fantastic addition to the neighborhood. The outside is understated, but you are transported to a quite beautiful space as you walk through the door. The menu is very eclectic, with lots of great and varied options. Service was friendly and attentive, but not overly intrusive. The food arrived promptly, looked great and was delicious. For a place that's only been open 2 months, they are doing great, and will only improve as they get into their rhythm. Will definitely be returning.

Fun place with imaginative dishes, good cocktails, good service and a superior wine list. Nice decor too.

Loved our first visit to General Public and will definitely be back!! Delicious food and drinks and a sweet setting for a fun night out!

It was a solid good! Impressed with the ambiance of the space and the food quality was high. Our server (or one of) seemed very new. We didn’t get water poured and then she would come over and ask if we were ready at very odd times — either way too soon when we hadn’t even touched the menu and then right when we were raising our glasses to do our first cheers of the night. Her “top must try” on the menu was a salad, which also was a bit weird considering all of the other really great options. She also didn’t know the wine menu. I would expect higher quality service when the prices were as high as they were. I wish the food was a little more British inspired too, it was like halfway there but there could have been more commitment to the cuisine. The banofee pie was a big let down! Very dense crust, only one little piece of banana and a fudge layer under the whipped cream which is not traditional. Opportunity to improve overall but will go back to give it another shot!

Professional service from end to end. We walked in around 7pm and were told they could squeeze us in if we were out in an hour when they needed the table. Food arrived at the table quickly (without us feeling rushed) and service was attentive and thoughtful, without being overly formal. Food was delectable. Wedge salad, fries, steak, shrimp cocktail, and the roast chicken were on point and executed to perfection. Wine list is playful and reasonable. As this is in our neighbourhood, we are delighted to be able to pop in again!

We went to General Public on a Friday night at 7:30 and walked into a buzzing, beautiful space. The service we received all night was perfect. Every staff member was friendly, knowledgeable and attentive. The food was excellent. We tried a lot of the smaller dishes. We ordered the chicken wings twice! They are delicious! Very tasty and interesting cocktails. The space itself is a dream. Warmly lit (good lighting is so important!) with gorgeous details. Some of the nicest washrooms in the city, hands down (every stall is different). We walked out well-fed, happy and eager to return. Thank you for the memorable evening! You’ve really created something special.

We had a lovely evening at General public we even got to meet the owner. Jen absolutely love the food and high-quality cocktails. The tongue and tail pie is a must have.

Amazing dining experience at General Public! The food was absolutely delicious—thoughtfully prepared and delicious. The service was outstanding; every staff member was attentive and genuinely welcoming. The decor and ambiance were beautifully done, creating a warm yet stylish vibe that made the meal even more enjoyable. Perfect spot for a night out in Toronto! Highly recommend.

General Public was great time! Thanks to Neil for making sure my experience was worth the while. I'll back for happy hour (I missed out on trying their infamous burger..smh) and the corner booth upstairs. Cheers!
