General Public is inspired by trying to imagine what an upscale English pub would be if it had the heart of an American brasserie (and was open 11 to 11). It’s also going to signal a little bit of steakhouse, but not too much. And finally, it will look behind itself at the Black Hoof, which you will see reflected in James Santon’s menu here and there. In terms of vibe, the main floor is ‘everything’s gone green’, with lush comfortable banquette seating, warm wood, and barstools designed for long conversations over many cocktails. Upstairs you’ll find a completely different space that transports you to a peachy 80s dream. Somehow these two halves make perfect sense, and complement each other in a seamless conversation, where neither wins the argument, but you really do have to see it! See you soon!

Days after and I’m still thinking about the experience! Incredible space, food, and service. Tongue and tail pie is unreal!

Just want to preface that the experience started out pretty bad from the beginning. I did make a reservation around 7 days prior to my visit. Upon arrival, we were put in the worst table possible - the tiny table under the stairs which was right in front of the door to the kitchen, which had really high traffic and was not pleasant. They said due to double bookings, and such, this was the only table available. We agreed and took the table anyways, but informed that we wanted to be move to a better table when one becomes available. We waited around 20-25 minutes for another party to finish up and were moved there. After being moved, it was another 15-20 minutes before the server came back to our table to take our orders. Considering, how not busy it was during that time, this was pretty bad. The food also came out pretty slow. The food was started out tasting pretty good, but the main was where it went a bit downhill. We ordered the Kanpachi crude and fried crusted clams/mussels - delicious. For mains, we got the Tongue and Tail Pie, and the NY Strip (asked to be cooked rare), with a side of Potato Roulade. While Tongue and Tail pie looked very aesthetically pleasing, the dish kind of fell short. Under the beautiful pie crust, there were barely any gravy to the stew. There were good amount of beef tongue and oxtail, but barely any gravy/stew, which made it quite dry. Half of the NY strip which we asked for rare was overcooked (almost medium to medium well). While the sauce was delicious, the overcooked meat kind of ruined it for us. We did also inform our server about the overcooked part of the dish (half), and was only replied with a “Oh Im so sorry about that” and he walked away, with no attempt for a resolution. We are not fussy and difficult customers, so I did just let it slide and finished the dish either way. For desserts, the banoffie pie was actually delicious, and kind of saved our meal. Overall, the restaurant still has tons of improvement to do.

Booked a reso for a spontaneous girls night & found our new favourite spot. Great food, great service, beautiful interiors, 10/10 playlist, also love a spot not too deep into the city. Overall perfect night.

I felt disappointed overall - had a 9pm reso and got seated at the bar which I expected, except that the bar isn't the traditional bar where you can order drinks they just have a bar overlooking the restaurant upstairs. It felt like the slush seating. It was for a birthday for someone who loves to sit at the bar so it was disappointing. Also the stools were really uncomfortable. The food was all good. Nothing that really wowed me especially in terms of presentation. The service was great, and I would give them a 10/10 for that!!!

Fantastic addition to the neighborhood. The outside is understated, but you are transported to a quite beautiful space as you walk through the door. The menu is very eclectic, with lots of great and varied options. Service was friendly and attentive, but not overly intrusive. The food arrived promptly, looked great and was delicious. For a place that's only been open 2 months, they are doing great, and will only improve as they get into their rhythm. Will definitely be returning.

Fun place with imaginative dishes, good cocktails, good service and a superior wine list. Nice decor too.

Loved our first visit to General Public and will definitely be back!! Delicious food and drinks and a sweet setting for a fun night out!

It was a solid good! Impressed with the ambiance of the space and the food quality was high. Our server (or one of) seemed very new. We didn’t get water poured and then she would come over and ask if we were ready at very odd times — either way too soon when we hadn’t even touched the menu and then right when we were raising our glasses to do our first cheers of the night. Her “top must try” on the menu was a salad, which also was a bit weird considering all of the other really great options. She also didn’t know the wine menu. I would expect higher quality service when the prices were as high as they were. I wish the food was a little more British inspired too, it was like halfway there but there could have been more commitment to the cuisine. The banofee pie was a big let down! Very dense crust, only one little piece of banana and a fudge layer under the whipped cream which is not traditional. Opportunity to improve overall but will go back to give it another shot!
