Gaijin by Chef Paul Virant is Chicago’s first okonomiyaki restaurant, offering both Hiroshima and Osaka styles of the savory Japanese pancake. A self-described gaijin, or “outsider” in Japanese, Virant playfully embraces this perspective and honors traditional preparations and techniques, as well as his well-known passion for pickling and preserving.

Designed to deliver a lively and interactive culinary experience, the 60-seat space is anchored by a custom 12-foot griddle and chef’s counter and offers individual Hiroshima teppan griddles for table service.

The dessert menu features kakigori, a shaved ice dessert, along with mochi donuts and other Japanese-inspired treats. The bar program showcases highballs and a focused selection of beer – including a Moody Tongue-Gaijin collaboration house lager, sake, Japanese whisky, and wine.

Join Gaijin for our fifth anniversary five-course tasting menu from Chef Paul Virant! Enjoy an elevated night of service at Gaijin, celebrating five years of okonomiyaki in the West Loop with premium expressions of our signature dishes and specially curated beverage pairings featuring Beam Suntory Japanese spirits. DJ Van Paugam will be in house spinning City Pop vinyl all night. This tasting menu is a set five course menu. Our kitchen appreciates advance notice of dietary restrictions and allergies. Please email us at info@gaijinchicago.com. This event is not pre-paid. Guests will be charged $80 per person for the menu (prior to tax and gratuity) at the conclusion of the meal. Optional beverage pairings cost $45 per person.

The food is good, we have the shrimp okonomiyaki really tast and matcha ice cream also in big portions. We had happy hour they have a good sake and martini

Absolutely wonderful. We visited from out of town and this was one of our best dining experiences, and a great value compared to many other places we went. The food is outstanding, and if you’re unsure of what to get I recommend asking a waiter for assistance. The cocktails are also very thoughtfully done and complimentary. We will be back for sure.

Honestly gross. Their menus is centered around a pancake with cabbage on it. Our server had no idea what to recommend, and the “outside seating” is right next to a loud busy street….i felt like side mirrors were going to hit the plants next to me as cars passed my table.

The Japanese pancakes are bursting with a cascade of flavors and ingredients. You usually cannot find these at other Japanese restaurants outside of Japan. The curried pork special was also spectacular. Go there. You will not be disappointed.

Gaijin, a super Japanese okonomiyako (savory cabbage pancake) restaurant. A flight of sake, salmon misoyaki (marinated in miso, mirin, sake and sugar), a chicken shawarma okonomiyaka and a mochi chocolate donut! An excellent dinner!

10/10 recommend! We had the shrimp yakisoba, pork okonomiyake, salmon starter, cucumber kimchi, and black sesame dessert - all of which were delicious and authentic tasting. We also thoroughly enjoyed our “yesterday” saké flights as well. Ana was our gracious server, and she was helpful and attentive. We can’t wait to go back!

We continue to love this place. Have dined here many times, but last night was the best. Orlando, our server was nothing short of outstanding. The brisket okonomyaki was off the charts. Will continue to be regulars here!
