Gaijin by Chef Paul Virant is Chicago’s first okonomiyaki restaurant, offering both Hiroshima and Osaka styles of the savory Japanese pancake. A self-described gaijin, or “outsider” in Japanese, Virant playfully embraces this perspective and honors traditional preparations and techniques, as well as his well-known passion for pickling and preserving.

Designed to deliver a lively and interactive culinary experience, the 60-seat space is anchored by a custom 12-foot griddle and chef’s counter and offers individual Hiroshima teppan griddles for table service.

The dessert menu features kakigori, a shaved ice dessert, along with mochi donuts and other Japanese-inspired treats. The bar program showcases highballs and a focused selection of beer – including a Moody Tongue-Gaijin collaboration house lager, sake, Japanese whisky, and wine.

We continue to love this place. Have dined here many times, but last night was the best. Orlando, our server was nothing short of outstanding. The brisket okonomyaki was off the charts. Will continue to be regulars here!

We visited to celebrate a birthday. We sat outside by the el so that's loud for people who might be bothered by that, we weren't We loved the food, the server and all the care taken by the staff. Will be back often.

I visited with three guests, and we were all thoroughly impressed by both the food and the ambiance. Gaijin offered an exceptional culinary adventure, especially with their Gaijin tasting experience, which provided us a well-curated four-course meal that truly allowed us to explore the best of their menu (for only $42 pp). The first course was Kombu marinated vegetables. They were crisp and delicately seasoned, with the umami from the kombu adding a depth of flavor that was both subtle and satisfying. For the second course, we had all four options. The beef ribs were tender and rich, with a savory glaze that was simply mouthwatering. The salmon was perfectly cooked, flaky and moist. The twice-cooked garlic had a delightful crunch and a robust garlic flavor that wasn't overpowering. Lastly, the bok choy provided a nice, lighter option, balancing out the richer dishes. For the third course we opted for different toppings to experience the full range of Okonomiyaki flavors. I chose the Shrimp, which was a fantastic choice—the shrimp were succulent and texture balanced well with the okonomiyaki to really elevate the dish. My guests tried the Octopus, Pork, and smoked fish versions, all of which were equally delicious. To finish, we indulged in the mochi donut holes, each of us picking a different flavor. The texture was light and chewy, making them a satisfying yet not overly heavy dessert. The Matcha-Citrus was a delightful balance of earthy matcha and bright citrus. The Strawberry was sweet and fruity, while the chocolate had a deep, rich flavor. The Pandan-Coconut had a unique, tropical taste. Gaijin offered a flavorful dining experience that showcased the best of Japanese comfort food. The Tasting Experience was an excellent way to explore the menu, with each course providing a unique and delicious taste of what the restaurant has to offer. We will definitely return to explore more options on the menu!

Stella and the whole Gaijin crew were excellent! Olivia also brought a great wealth of knowledge to add to our discussion. I made a new friend and tried lots of unique drinks. Thank you!

We had an amazing experience. We did the whiskey tasting and experience with 4 courses. I loved the beef ribs. We couldn’t finish our food and had leftovers. Everything tasted great and the waitress explained how everything worked. I would go back and try more items.

We sat at a table and the service was prompt with good attention to detail. The food was excellent and we recommend making sure to leave room for the desserts. Unfortunately they don’t allow you to remove the 3% service charge.

Generally a very nice experience but, unfortunately, the cuisine was not very appealing to me. The restaurant prepares us dishes well. However I just want thrilled with the unique Japanese style. Great service.
