Forty Pearl is a sensory Pure Michigan experience in the heart of Downtown Grand Rapids. Our mission is to showcase Michigan wines and small-batch wineries by pairing them with adventurous bites and sourcing seasonal ingredients locally. We are a collective of Michigan-based winemakers, chefs, storytellers, and characters.

Originally opened by Ed and Robert Brengman as a tasting room to showcase their award-winning wines and bring a taste of Traverse City to Grand Rapids, Forty Pearl has grown to be a neighborhood gem in Grand Rapids.

We’d put Michigan up with the best of ‘em for producing some of the finest wine, cocktails, and food and we strive to showcase this in every glass and plate served. Our restaurant is best suited for adults.

Forty Pearl I could not have been more disappointed in my experience at Forty Pearl. I’ve been going to restaurants in downtown Grand Rapids this past June because I have been organizing different combination of folks to see the Carole King musical at Civic. This was my first time trying Forty Pearl and it will be my last. While the server was pleasant enough, she performed her job poorly. We had a reservation for a table of 8, and right at the beginning I realized we would need to add an additional chair to accommodate a 9th person. I asked her about this early on and she kept saying, “…she would have to check.” I’m not sure what she’d have to check on, we had a 5:30 reservation and the place was not close to being full and all that was required was an additional chair - not a table extension - just a chair. She finally brought one, but not before me having to make the request multiple times. It got worse. We ordered our entrees all at the same. Everyone in our group got their entrees around the same time, except for one person who had a burger. He got his burger about twenty minutes after everyone else - twenty minutes - unacceptable, but what made it worse was she offered no explanation about what led to the delay. She offered no apologies. We had one person who ordered a glass of wine and again, we had to I think I asked her twice about the wine. Do not recommend.

Mussels should always have more than 1 toast and a discard bowl, the Brussels were overcooked

This is one of my favorite places downtown. They have a very good wine selection and tasty food, although they have pared down their menu and my favorite Great Lakes Chowder is gone. The smoked whitefish dip is very good. The Caesar with chicken was another winner. Our server was amazing with her knowledge of the wine and she took great care of us.

First time here, walked by so many times. Menu had a good variety of protein options which is always nice. The brussel sprouts are amazing. My friend chicken sandwich was missing the pickles which I love so that was disappointing. Otherwise everyone liked their food. The burger with truffle fries, seafood pasta, baked chicken, and my fried chicken sandwich.

When we arrived, with a reservation, we were questioned about the details as though we were trying to sneak in. There was one other party in the restaurant at the time as well as a few people at the bar. Some of my thoughts are the same as in other reviews. The menu is quite limited. Oddly, there are bread plates on the table, but no bread available. I choose 40 Pearl because there is duck on the menu, a favorite of my husband's and not typically found. It was average, cooked inconsistently- some pieces tender and medium, other tough and well done. While there was nothing inherently wrong, there was also nothing special enough to take us back.

Great food, great cocktails, great service. I liked the emphasis on local items in parts of the menu, including the wines and the meat and cheese board.

Great location, environment, and service impeccable. To set context, we brought our four children/teenagers/adult children. Mix of tastes and preferences became an issue with a small menu. My 16 got the duck. Exceptional meat with veggies the only is was the sweet potato was grossley undercooked. My wife and daughter shared a salad with fries, excellent garlic fries. My two older boys 19/21 burger + fries, excellent choice. I ordered the rib eye expecting a great cut of meat at this price point. The potatoes with veggies were tremendous. The cut of steak was cold, undercooked, and the amount of fat on the cut didn't gel with the price. Sent back, came out again undercooked. Overall great place with a tremendous upside; however if you don't get some of these little things fixed they turn into larger word of mouth marketing problems. My wife and I will return for sure. Sweet bar area 🤣!
