The Formosa Cafe is a restaurant and bar founded in 1939 and located at 7156 Santa Monica Boulevard at the intersection with North Formosa Avenue, in West Hollywood, California.

The restaurant has a long history of movie star and film industry patronage due to its close proximity to studio lot across the street, which began as the United Artists lot and was later owned by Warner Bros. Generations of movie stars such as Humphrey Bogart and Clark Gable have eaten meals at The Formosa. Frank Sinatra is reputed to have spent many nights at the Formosa in the 1950s, pining over Ava Gardner.

After a brief 2 year hiatus, a complete refurbishment, and a tremendous menu update The Formosa Cafe has returned to serve the Los Angeles community once again.

The food and drinks were excellent! Perfect way to spend our one year wedding anniversary. Our server was amazing. Was very attentive and made great suggestions since it was our first time dining there.

We had been seated on the top porch, which is a covered area. We watched an old Buster Keaton movie, and listened to a live pianist play the accompanying music for the movie. The food was great! Orange chicken and really fabulous chicken chow mien! The Mai Tai was very good! The food is on the expensive side, but with the service and ambience so great, it was a wonderful splurge!

Great service. Parking garage was reasonably priced. Arrived on time and seated immediately. Loved the history.

Formosa Cafe is a classic restaurant in Los Angeles. It’s lively and fun. Our server was terrific as well as the food and drinks. A fun place to take out of town visitors.

Friendly welcome! Was able to sit at Elvis Presley’s booth with friends who went for the first time. That was special! The wait staff was friendly and service was timely. The food choices provide variety and are tasty! It’s filled with Hollywood history!

The food and service were outstanding! And the ambience was interesting and vintage. I had two issues: Lipstick marks on the glasses and stains on the coffee mugs didn't give me confidence in the cleanliness of the place. The other issue was much worse. There were 2 young women in the stall across from us that spoke (yelled) so loud we couldn't speak to each other during the meal. We finally resorted to yelling at the top of our lungs to be heard. Didn't have a problem with any other diners in the room we were in and the bar noise was acceptable. It was just these two women who made our meal difficult to enjoy.

Wednesday Sept 18th was my third experience eating at the Formosa. The ambiance, the 40's/50's booths, the cable car/street car area of the restaurant, & the service, are top notch! However, the Orange Chicken was merely so, so. The friend I brought couldn't stop talking about how great & tender her steak was!!! The Walnut Shrimp I had on my visit here in March was very tasty. Overall, I'd recommend you give this restaurant a try, especially if you are nostalgic. The history of celebs who've dined there through the years is like the whose who of showbiz stars. Humphrey Bogart, Liz Taylor, Ava Gardner, John Wayne, Sidney Poitier, Gregory Peck, and the list goes on & on!! The walls are lined with numerous celebs you'll remember from the Golden Years(30's thru the 50's) of Hollywood. I'll definitely return soon for another evening of dining with the stars of the past. Service was subpar the night we went — drinks sat empty for the majority of the evening; believe we got refills once before leaving and only because we asked. Server was hard to pin down once we we were ready to wrap as well.
