The Formosa Cafe is a restaurant and bar founded in 1939 and located at 7156 Santa Monica Boulevard at the intersection with North Formosa Avenue, in West Hollywood, California.

The restaurant has a long history of movie star and film industry patronage due to its close proximity to studio lot across the street, which began as the United Artists lot and was later owned by Warner Bros. Generations of movie stars such as Humphrey Bogart and Clark Gable have eaten meals at The Formosa. Frank Sinatra is reputed to have spent many nights at the Formosa in the 1950s, pining over Ava Gardner.

After a brief 2 year hiatus, a complete refurbishment, and a tremendous menu update The Formosa Cafe has returned to serve the Los Angeles community once again.

It was our first time coming here and turned out to be one of the best Halloweens we ever celebrated thanks to the Formosa Cafe! The ambience alone made it extremely special but also our server was absolutely one of the best servers and hosts that we’ve ever had at a restaurant, making the entire experience an evening of fun and inviting us to want to come back for more! We also love that the entire staff was friendly, fun, and they got into the Halloween spirit wearing costumes! The restaurant played some of the best rock music of the 90s-2000s era, but we were a little bummed though when they turned it off to play Charli xcx. Now for the food… The chow mein was really good! The lettuce wraps were amazing! The eggrolls tasted a bit premade, like a frozen brand, but still edible. We got so full that we now have to return to try the Apple Cinnamon Wonton dessert because we have heard amazing things about it. 5 Stars overall and we can not wait to be back soon! Thank You Formosa Cafe!

It's a Los Angeles iconic deco dream. Impeccably decorated, food & wait staff is exceptional. Love eating & drinking at the Formosa for 30yrs now

The short rib noodles and broccoli beef was delicious! The drinks are expertly made. The experience is memorable, enjoy!😋

Exquisite historic charm, inviting and immersive ambiance, outstanding cuisine and friendly, talented service make this a popular spot. The menu tends toward Asian fusion but offers other options as well. Beautiful bar and creative cocktails.

The food was amazing!!! The chili wontons were the best bite of the night, followed closely by the orange chicken. The Nay Nay Martini was sweet and bright paired perfectly with what we ordered. The apple wonton with ice cream was the best dessert we’ve ever had! The staff at Formosa were so attentive, the service was great, the food came out super quickly and the design/ambiance was unbeatable. 10/10 would absolutely recommend and come back!

Formosa never disappoints. The atmosphere is always giving glamour. perfect for having a dressed up birthday dinner or something relaxed. The lighting is always nice and slightly dim. and the fooood omg the foooood, you MUST get the chow fun!! the only thing was the app asked any special occasions and we put birthday but nothing was brought out or offered at the restaurant. It feels akward to ask for birthday desserts so we just ordered regular dessert.

To be honest didn’t have too high of hopes as many of the “must do” things you find in a place like LA don’t live up to the hype but we were pleasantly surprised! It is by no means cheap but what is in CA. The drinks and food were very good. We enjoyed Mia Tia’s and the Belle of Georgia drinks along with Chili Wontons to start. For dinner we chose the Spicy Wok Fried Rice, General Tso’s Cauliflower and the Chinese BBQ Pork. Everything was cooked perfectly and had a wonderful balance of flavors plus we had leftovers! My only warning is to start with a small amount of the spicy mustard with your pork as it packs a pretty powerful horseradish punch, it’s good but beware!
