The Formosa Cafe is a restaurant and bar founded in 1939 and located at 7156 Santa Monica Boulevard at the intersection with North Formosa Avenue, in West Hollywood, California.

The restaurant has a long history of movie star and film industry patronage due to its close proximity to studio lot across the street, which began as the United Artists lot and was later owned by Warner Bros. Generations of movie stars such as Humphrey Bogart and Clark Gable have eaten meals at The Formosa. Frank Sinatra is reputed to have spent many nights at the Formosa in the 1950s, pining over Ava Gardner.

After a brief 2 year hiatus, a complete refurbishment, and a tremendous menu update The Formosa Cafe has returned to serve the Los Angeles community once again.

A absolute must; incredible food by any standard, great service and an absolutely classic location dating back to at least the 50s.

We went for brunch and the service was excellent. I had a bao that was tasty. I also had the scallion pancakes but it was very stiff and not flavorful. My mates had the pork belly breakfast sandwich that was good but should come with a knife! And my other friend had orange chicken that was plentiful and delicious.

This place was Beautiful, delicious, and historically rich. My colleagues and I had lunch there to say farewell to a fellow colleague. It was the perfect choice for us. The food was tasty and the staff was exceptional. I plan to return with friends 😄

Interesting experience. Been here before and enjoyed it, this second time less so. Two years ago it was playing music of the Golden Age of Hollywood era. This time it was very loud rock. What we ordered was tasty, but didn’t hang around for entrees, the music was way too much to enjoy the meal. We asked to move to a quieter table and it took around ten minutes for someone to come back to us (the restaurant was about 30% full.) Decided to cut out while we had the chance. Definitely a great place to go at least once and soak up the history and the food is good.

First time we’ve dined at Formosa Cafe. The interior was what I expected and it was fitting for its history. There were 6 of us and everyone enjoyed the dishes that we shared among us. While we enjoyed the choice of music for a Sunday dinner it could’ve been played at a lower volume. The server made me aware of the 20% service charge for parties of 6 or more and he did it in such an honest way that I tipped him more. While Formosa Cafe is by no means a local restaurant for us we will return.

My dining companion was a Taiwan native just returned from a family visit to Taipei. She judged the food excellent (although Formosa does not pretend to be "authentic') and the atmosphere even better. Full of neighborhood regulars. Will be back.

Food is great. Service is generally not great: they’re always nice but just not generally on top of things (need for constant reminders of water refills, orders, etc.). The bartender was great but our server was a little behind tend eight ball all evening.
