Exchequer, also known by regulars and locals as "The Ex", has been called the best kept secret in downtown Chicago.

Family owned and operated since 1969, Exchequer combines a welcoming atmosphere with a fantastic menu featuring a handful of Chicago staples, like Chicago style pizza, Italian beef sandwiches, or a Combo. The Ex was rated #1 Deep Dish Pizza by the Chicago Tribune and received a 4 star rating from Roger Ebert. Over 20 beers on tap, signature cocktails, and delicious food for over 50 years.

We dined here at the last minute after searching for late seating in the area. Overall, the experience was good. It was close to 10p, so there wasn’t much activity or noise in the restaurant other than music and a handful of customers. The food was just okay, but the drinks were excellent. Another plus was the friendly and attentive staff/servers. We would likely dine here again at some point.

Conveniently located bar and restaurant with pub food that is typical Chicago fare: deep dish pizza, ribs, Italian beef… The portions are a good size and we all enjoyed our meal. It was reasonably priced and although located near a touristic area, it felt more like a place that locals would frequent.

My family went to this restaurant before a concert and the food was amazing. The service was a bit slow but they were busy. I tried the ribs which were delicious and the rest of my crew had the pizza and said the crust could have been cooked a little more but the sauce and other ingredients were delicious. There is a ton of history at this place and overall a great experience.

I saw recommendations for the pizza at the spot so I decided to go off the beaten path and try it. We had deep dish and it was good, however not the caramelized, crispy dough I hoped for in a pan pizza. It was pretty doughy. I did like the flavor of the red sauce. Service was good.

I had a late lunch here on my last day in Chicago. We were super hungry so we ordered full slab rips and shrimp Alfredo. Both were cooked to perfection, I couldn’t believe I would eat two main courses but I did without any hesitation. Staff, service and ambiance were fantastic. Definitely a 5 plus experience both for value and quality of food. P.S. decor is simply gorgeous!

My wife and I were attending an event at the Chicago Public Library. We had an early dinner at 4 pm. We arrived and were seated promptly at a table as requested. We each had a cocktail, an Old Fashioned and a Manhattan. Both were well made and strong. we ordered the trio appetizer and the large Harvest Salad. The salad was enough for 4 people, a bargain for 16.50. My wife had the steak sandwich and I ordered a full slab of ribs. We will both get a second meal. Service was smooth. We are looking forward to trying the pizza on our next visit. Great place for pre or post play or event meals.
