It’s no great leap to surmise that Essenza means 'essence' in Italian. What you get in this smart, intimate neighbourhood trattoria is the essence of fresh, seasonal, Italian cooking. This boxy little spot is simply trendy, with persimmon banquettes, white table cloths, wood chairs, a smart little bar, and it is packed to the gills with similarly smart and trendy Notting Hill locals who all seem to know the waiters and each other. The menu roams the regions, featuring excellent standards like starter of caprese or beef carpaccio, home made pastas like fettuccine with porcini mushrooms and bacon sauce, main course of grilled selection of shellfish, and dessert of chocolate and coffee tiramisu. The mostly Italian wine list features a couple of nice grappas, too. Express Business Lunch and thoughtful Children’s Menu are welcome extras.

                    Food was great. Probably the best Italian food we’ve had in the UK to date. (Bread basket was ok.) Service was rough. The men looked overwhelmed and annoyed throughout the experience. When I asked for a drink, I got an eye roll. When I asked for bread, I got another eye roll. I had to ask for the desert menu because all 4 guys forgot about us. Our food took longer to prepare than expected (others that arrive 10-15 minutes after us were served first) but ultimately the food was great. Lower your expectations on the service and plan for a longer than usual wait time.

                    Always delicious and cosy and you can hear yourself speak here. Yummy health sea bass and broccoli. But the pasta is all recommendable.

                    We were really looking forward to this meal, as other reviews raved about the food. We were a bit disappointed. Starters were good, of the three entrees one was good one fair and one not so good. Service was okay but not friendly

                    The food was good. However, our booking wasn't prepared for - no table for 5 ready (tables had to be moved) or booster chair as requested (twice!). Considering the number of reminders I received I thought they’d be ready for us! We were there early (6pm) due to having children with us so I didn’t expect it to busy, however, instead it felt like more of a thoroughfare as delivery orders were flying out and a constant flow of drivers flooding in. I was disappointed in the atmosphere as it was a special occasion and we paid a considerable amount. A real shame. Will stick to Osteria and Mediterraneo next time.
