We had a lovely time and delicious dinner with sake to compliment our various courses. It was such a fun evening and very different from a hotel restaurant.

My husband and I joined the 530pm sitting yesterday and had a great experience with Tama. The food was excellent and was well paired with onsite produced sake. Our experience started with a tasty simmered tomato and sweet onion and continued with several course ranging from amberjack sashimi to unadon. Throughout the incredible experience, Tama was a great host and we look forward to another great time on our next trip. Thanks again Tama

This place is a hidden gem, just a short walk from the Westin Hapuna at the golf clubhouse. If you've had enough of the resort restaurant formula, treat yourself to an authentic multi-course Japanese dining experience inside a sake brewery. The food is varied and delicious, with excellent treatment of vegetables in particular. The sake brewmaster is also the chef and the pairings of sake with the courses were perfect. The setting is quiet and private, a bit spare, but we understand that the dining area will soon be remodeled. Big Island residents in particular, but also tourists, really should support Engawa -- the proprietor is doing something different and special!

This is a unique experience, the service and food were outstanding. The sake was exceptional, we did the pairing. The food is Japanese inspired, so if you have a picky eater with you beware! We loved it all, menu changes on a regular basis. Next time on the big island, we will be back! The unagi dinner entree was delicious!

We were staying across the street at the Westin Hapuna and we’re looking for an authentic Japanese restaurant. Less to choose from in the Kohala area than we thought. Engawa is located across the street a short, five minute walk very convenient. The couple that manages and runs the Omakase experience is very enjoyable very authentic really a lot of fun . They are the ONLY sake Brewery in Hawaii. Thanks small craft beer, sucking style. Omakase menu was delightful with a broad array of flavors and taste all for quality We added the sake pairings. Try it!

We had a great experience dining at Engawa. The atmosphere is welcoming and very relaxing. The service is top notch and the food is some of the best I have ever experienced. And the Sake was delicious! Visiting Engawa was one of my top dining experiences and I’m having a hard time thinking of a better experience anywhere on the Big Island.

Fantastic intimate experience at the Westin Hapuna Bay. The sake is brewed onsite. Prix fixe menu only so no decisions ahead of you. Just relax and enjoy.

Dining at Engawa is akin to dining at the owners’ home. They take so much care of their guests. Food and drinks were beautifully presented and tasted delicious. There was a lovely melding of Hawaiian and Japanese ingredients. I was grateful for the chef’s willingness to accommodate my gluten restriction. We enjoyed learning about the sake brewing process and tasting several different ones. The golf course at sunset provided a beautiful backdrop. The pacing is relaxed. It is dinner as an experience and is likely best for diners willing to try new things and savor them.
