Dukes is a characterful bar & bistro nestled at the heart of Margate’s historic Old Town.

Serving refined French-inspired bistro classics including indulgent fish pie, locally sourced moules frites, fresh Provençale style salads & succulent signature burgers, alongside a lovingly considered selection of wines, Kentish beers, house cocktails & Champagne by the glass.

Located just off the seafront, a short walk from Dreamland & the Turner Contemporary, amongst a peppering of charming boutiques, bars & restaurants, Dukes offers guests a relaxed moment of timeless escapism from the busy Market Place.

In summer, the Garden Grill, with sprawling Mediterranean sun terrace, provides a peaceful oasis from the hustle and bustle of the Main Sands, serving crab frites, burgers, local draught beer and refreshing spritz.

    The food wasn’t great value for money. I wouldn’t recommend. The staff however were great.

    Hey Paul, thank you so much for taking the time to give us your feedback. My name is Lucas and i'm one of the owners of Dukes. I can't see on here when you visited us but I would really like to get the opportunity to invite you back and hopefully change your mind. There's no excuse to fall below the high standards that we pride ourselves on, I just have to explain that we have been operating for a period of time with trainee and agency staff so we could still open the doors, and at times some of our temporary team members were not up to scratch in many ways and I can all but apologize and hope you'll give us a second chance with our new head chef, as happy guests are the most important part of running a small business like ours.     This is my 6-7 visit to Dukes in the last 6 months, and this one was a disappointment. They were clearly trying to empty the restaurant for a private party and should not have taken our booking. We came for the crab frites, they had run out but didn’t tell us until we’d chosen our food. Service was brisk… 3 members of staff asked me if I wanted to pay the bill, which I had already done. We had one course and left as we were clearly unwelcome - we weren’t even asked if we wanted dessert. I do appreciate they’d likely had a busy day but one member of staff was really surly. I am local and I felt disappointed that I’d taken friends & recommended it as friendly & fun. Not sure I’ll come again..,

    Hello, I am Lucas, one of the owners of Dukes. I am absolutely mortified to be reading your feedback about the restaurant that my husband and I invest so much love and care into and it certainly doesn't reflect the high standards and customer focused service that we pride ourselves on. All I can do is apologize and assure you that I am conducting an investigation as to what happened here.     Food was terrible. And I mean terrible. Gritty salad that hadn’t been washed properly. With a couple of hard potatoes and a few green beans, and a sloppy poached egg plonked on top. Honestly it was awful. Everything else was covered in salt. And the bread platter (£8) was some dried up crusts from the bottom of the bread bin. Such a shame as this was a special occasion. Gutted.

    Hello, Thank you so much for taking the time to feed back to us. I'm Lucas, one of the owners of Dukes and i'm obviously mortified to be reading your message as your experience doesn't reflect the love and energy that my husband and I have invested into our little restaurant. I can all but apologize and invite you down to Dukes so we can have the opportunity to make it up to you and explain that we have had some staffing issues over the summer, having to hire temporary staff who didn't live up to our standards at times. There is no excuse for providing a below par experience though and i'm confident that if you come and spend some time with us now we have an amazing new head chef then you will change your mind.     The food here is lovely. We've had Sunday lunch and the summer menu and both were really great. The general vibe of Duke's is wonderful and all the staff were friendly and attentive.

    When we arrived for our pre-booked table of six people at 2pm, we were seated and asked if we would be eating and drinking, we informed staff we would be both eating and drinking and were given food and drinks menus to look over. After around fifteen mins a staff member came and asked to take our drinks orders. Drinks arrived about fifteen minutes later. Forty five minutes later (been sat for over an hour and fifteen minutes by now) nobody had come to take our food order….I asked staff if someone could take our order and was told someone would be over in a moment…..another ten minutes later we still had not been approached by staff so we could order, so I had to ask again if someone could come and take our order. Ten minutes later staff finally came to take our food order. We ordered and the food came out within about 20 minutes. Our order was; 3 x Moules Marinière and Frites 1 Steak Verde ordered medium/rare 1 Chicken Caesar Salad 1 starter potion of baked Camembert 1 portion of rosemary fries. The food was ok, my friend ordered the Steak Verde medium/rare, which when arrived was overcooked. There was no pink inside whatsoever and it was brown all the way through. By this point we couldn’t be bothered to ask to have it changed as we were all really hungry given the exceptionally long wait to order food, so my friend just ate what she was given. When we asked for the bill we were annoyed to find that we had all been charged for large portions despite not being asked what size portion we wanted. My friend who did state a starter portion of the baked Camembert was charged for a sharing portion. By this point we were over it and just wanted to pay and leave. The service was diabolical and it wasn’t very busy. There were two other tables sat eating. So why we were kept waiting so long is anybody’s guess. To add insult £23 was added for a gratuity. The service was diabolical but none of us could be bothered to complain so we all paid and left. We will not return.

I am obviously mortified to be reading your message as your experience clearly isn't in line with the high standards that we pride ourselves with at Dukes and it certainly isn't a reflection of the restaurant that my husband and I have invested so much love into.
