In 1962, Johnny Harlowe made the jump from the silver screen to chef and owner of Dear John’s. Convinced by his pal Frank Sinatra, Johnny opened the iconic spot just a ways down from Sony Studios on Culver Blvd. It became the watering-hole for the Hollywood elite with Sinatra often in the corner playing the piano against the dark brick walls once lined with portraits of famous John’s. Seasoned chefs and entrepreneurs Hans Röckenwagner and Josiah Citrin have teamed up to re-open Dear John’s with an updated classic American menu and old-school cocktail list.

The dining room was extremely dark? Almost too dark to read menus, see dish when delivered, and other difficultles. We asked to relocate to the outdoor where we finished meals! Our waiter stayed with our group which was very nice. As usual, the pricing was quite high and didn’t really give you a fare deal. Two ordered meals had to be returned to the kitchen do to the lack of preparation. .

Service was significantly lacking this time. I've been probably 10-15 times in the past few years and this was the worst experience I've had. There was one waitress for the entire outside who paid little to no attention to our table, never checked on us, and wee waited a very long time before ever putting in our order. No maitre d checking on us or the outside ever. Definitely disappointing experience

Fabulous in all regards: bar, food and service. No place like it in the City, with the possible exception of Dear Jane’s.

We had heard about Dear John's for years and finally went for a birthday celebration. It's a wonderful 'old school' Los Angeles restaurant, with great service and delicious food. It is VERY DARK. But that is part of the charm. While tables are very close together, because this is an older building, sound from conversations is absorbed, so we didn't have to scream at each other to be heard, unlike our experience in multiple new restaurants. Another positive point -- the music is not blasting, again, adding to a calm and pleasant dining experience.

We sat in the patio which was perfect on a warm summer evening. Inside is very dark and super noisy. The service was excellent and the food delicious. All with Sinatra music in the background.

Food and service were exceptional. Only minor complaint is that they keep it VERY dark in there. And I like dark restaurants.
