In 1962, Johnny Harlowe made the jump from the silver screen to chef and owner of Dear John’s. Convinced by his pal Frank Sinatra, Johnny opened the iconic spot just a ways down from Sony Studios on Culver Blvd. It became the watering-hole for the Hollywood elite with Sinatra often in the corner playing the piano against the dark brick walls once lined with portraits of famous John’s. Seasoned chefs and entrepreneurs Hans Röckenwagner and Josiah Citrin have teamed up to re-open Dear John’s with an updated classic American menu and old-school cocktail list.

Lovely experience, but a little too loud. And TBH, speaking comparatively with simila dining experiences in LA, a little too pricy!!! Ended up significantly more $ than a very similar meal at Spago, just a week ago!!

Great waiter….efficient and pleasant! We had a wonderful dinner, however, we all felt it was a little too dark and the music a little loud.

Great steaks (and classic sides), great wedge salad, and great classic cocktails. Everything a classic steakhouse should be. And when they have Osso buco or a veal chop that is definitely something to try as well. Fish dishes are good too.

Very disappointing meal at Dear John’s. With the exception of the lamb special, which was delicious, all of the dishes we ordered were mediocre at best. The shrimp cocktail came without cocktail sauce. The $30+ chicken Parmesan was underwhelming and felt like something concocted from a kid’s menu. The ambiance was nice, although exceptionally dark. Thought we had booked at one of those “dining in the dark” experiences when we first arrived. For what the restaurant saves in utilities by using no electricity, they could invest in better food and lower prices.

Our first visit. Excited to try another in the Josiah Citrin network. Curious to experience a place with so much history. We had such a good time. We sat outside (quieter, casual, very comfortable, and heat lamps as needed) and shared a Caesar salad prepared with elan table-side, filet, sand dabs and broccolini. All good. So delicious. Ben and Jeffrey made our night in the way of service. Professional, expert, funny, kind, and attentive without being cloying. Overall, it was a most excellent dinner and evening. Highly recommended.

Dear John's is a classic! If you want to step back into time where the restaurants had only the BEST, simple yet delicious food, fantastic cocktails, great service, including table side caesar salad preparation...this is the place for you! I went with my friends who appreciated the high quality of the food and the excellent customer service...they don't make them like this anymore, so run don't walk to Dear John's for your next special event...or just want to experience a dining experience just like Frank Sinatra!

Great service, great food, a bit overpriced compared to similar places in Culver City. Would like to sit inside next time

I’d been wanting to come here for several months. It was definitely worth the hype. The food was delicious. We never double up on an item at dinner. We simply agree to come back and dine again. The macaroni and cheese was SO good we ordered a second one. The customer service was great as well. I sent a cocktail back and ordered a different one without a hassle. No questions were asked. No attitude was given. The experience was excellent. Simply fantastic. I’ll be back soon.
