Core 450 is an instagrammable destination, to delight all the senses, from breathtaking views to our expansive outdoor patio complete with a full-service open kitchen just north of Travelers Rest, South Carolina.

The restaurant led by owners Matthew and Renee Jennings and Chef Gene Magliaro serves refined, rustic cuisine, innovative libations, and a world class wine list. Known as a “must visit” among the Upstate’s dining scene, Core 450’s professional and passionate team are constantly striving to push the boundaries of excellence with well-rounded menus that feature classic dishes and drinks with contemporary twists rooted in tradition.

    It was not busy when we went at 5:00 on a Tuesday, so the noise level was very low. The ambiance was very relaxed and sophisticated. The drinks were good, and they have an excellent wine selection. We ordered 2 steaks cooked rare, but my wife’s came out medium - medium well. Furthermore, our waitress was rather negligent.

    We’ve dined here several times but this was our first poor experience. Our server disappeared for about 15-20 minutes after taking our drink and appetizer order so food orders were put in very late. One of our appetizers was wrong but we were hungry and didn’t say anything. When the wine arrived, for the first time we were given a bottle that had the cork pulled and stuffed in upside down. Just placed on the table with the glasses at the corner of the table and walked off. We all ordered steaks yet only one was cooked to order. Three were sorely undercooked with two being cool and “blue”, translated, they were raw. They had placed a “500° salt block” on the table so if the steak was slightly undercooked it could be perfected. We’ve also had this and the last time it was quite nice. It was warm but certainly not 500° as steak didn’t sizzle as in the past. Putting your hand near it also wasn’t fear-inducing so I touched it with my finger for a couple seconds. Yes, that happened and my finger wasn’t red or otherwise injured so it was probably closer to 250-300°. Things got corrected but with the prices being charged, this kind of experience shouldn’t happen. I’m not writing off Core 450 but they need to remember that the upstate is a haven for foodies and a lot of farm-to-table restaurants. They shouldn’t become complacent.

    Core 450 is, without a doubt, one of the finest dining experiences I’ve ever had. From the moment we walked in, we were greeted with warmth and impeccable service. The ambiance was perfect — upscale yet comfortable — and every detail was thoughtfully curated. As for the food — near perfection, but the waitress returned the food and it returned with high quality. The steak was cooked to absolute perfection, tender and flavorful, and the side dishes complemented it wonderfully. Everything from appetizers to desserts was crafted with precision and care.

    Great to see Chef Gene and the crew preparing a limited menu and making preparations for a full reopening Thursday after the impact of Helene. Food and service was great and spirits were good. This crew and owners have also taken supplies to help devastated areas. Go Go Go!

    Our experience was wonderful. During a power outage due to Hurricane Helene, they stayed open, cooked food on the grill and maintained their reputation of hospitality and great service. The staff was great and we’ll be sure to come back in the future.

    We were seating promptly on the patio as requested. Our server Leah was wonderful. very attentive and friendly. My wife slipped on a pineapple Mojito, enjoying the breeze and the view while we waited for our food. She started with the summer salad, which was refreshing and delicious. I ordered the 8 ounce fillet. It was so tender. You could almost pull it apart without a knife. The flavor was delicious. My wife had the Chilean Seabass and she said it was the best piece of fish she had ever eaten. The flavors were perfect. The risotto was creamy and full of flavor. We found this place by accident, but will make sure it is in our regular rotation. The sunsets are beautiful and the golf course makes it super quiet outside and very peaceful.

    The country club atmosphere was palpable. We liked watching the golfers finish up their games. The menu had a variety of choices. I would advise choosing a more simple fare of meat and veggies. The main cucumber salad was too oily/hot to eat and the flavor profile did not say "Thai". The sea bass was cooked well but the sauce and onion medley (I think that was what it was) was way too salty and took away from the dish. According to my dinner partner, the steak was amazing and baked potato was perfection. The desert in a small cast iron skillet was over-the-top. We will return for the brick oven pizza which looked and smelled delicious.
