As a long-time admirer of Cantinetta, I was excited to explore COMO, given its stellar reputation. However, my six experiences have been a mixed bag, with only one memorable visit standing out among several disappointments.
COMO boasts an enviable location and an inviting ambiance that draws me in. However, my recent visits have left much to be desired. The food quality has been inconsistent; unfortunately, my most recent dining experience was lackluster. Despite my high hopes, the meal fell flat, lacking the flair, flavor, and freshness you would expect.
Service was another area of concern. On this particular night, September 7th, 2024 , our server's demeanor was notably curt and unhelpful. I had requested arugula on my pizza, which was missing when it arrived. Despite repeated inquiries, it was only addressed when I had nearly finished my meal. Such lapses in service, coupled with the lack of attentiveness, marred an otherwise enjoyable evening.
On a positive note, the ambiance at COMO remains its strongest asset. Although my reservation had requested outdoor seating—a preference I made a month in advance—we were seated inside. Interestingly, this turned out to be a blessing in disguise, as the indoor setting was unexpectedly charming.
An unexpected highlight of the evening was meeting their new sommelier who, we have loved at his previous restaurant in Seattle for 20 years! In our opinion, he is the best in the Pacific Northwest. His presence, along with a friendly farewell from the owner, helped salvage our night.
In contrast, Cantinetta remains a shining example of culinary excellence and warmth, which makes the disparity at COMO all the more disappointing. The owners clearly understand quality, as demonstrated by Cantinetta's success. I sincerely hope COMO steps up its game to match the exceptional standard set by its sister restaurant.
I think the only reason I would visit COMO again is to see Sol, their new Somm.
