COMAL is a gathering place located in Berkeley’s bustling Arts District, just north of the Downtown Berkeley BART Station. The restaurant is housed in a single-story building (circa 1927) and features a lush, secluded rear patio with a full bar, covered dining area, and al fresco beer garden with fire pit.

Executive Chef Matt Gandin creates earthy, modern interpretations of dishes from throughout Mexico, with emphasis on Oaxaca and neighboring coastal regions. We offer an “all-Mexican” list of craft cocktails, house-made sangritas paired with our curated collection of agave spirits, and a diverse selection of local beer and wine on tap.

Also please note that Comal charges a 20% service charge in lieu of tips.

Just what we needed - a great salad followed by delicious enchiladas and tacos. We had good and fairly priced wine by the glass. Our server was excellent.

The food is meh. The eggplant and pepitas app was not great, like at all. Do not get that dish. Not sure what has happened to the quality of the food, but it’s not like it used to be.

We've eaten here several times. For the most part, the food is very good and so are the Margaritas. This time the enchiladas were excellent, as was the flan (unusually creamy and flavorful), but the fish taco was not especially tasty, and the vegetable mix (Brussels sprouts and squash) was tasteless.

We were seated immediately after arriving. Before ordering something I hadn't ordered before, I asked our waiter about it and he described it to us. The food was served promptly. All in all, a great experience.

I invited two friends to dinner at Comal following an Aurora Theatre Sunday matinee. The earliest reservation for Comal is 5pm and the show was over at 4pm so we stopped for a cocktail at Revival before heading to our early dinner. I love Comal's atmosphere. The front room is lovely but I especially like the covered patio and bar in the back. It is well heated and somehow manages to feel both warm and cozy and open at the same time. Along with margaritas, we had the cucumber and jicama starter with chile arbol and lime, which was tangy, fresh and delicious. We also tried the sikit pak, plantain chips with a dip made from toasted pumpkin seed and eggplant. The crispy, salty chips went beautifully with the creamy dip. For dinner, we split a chile relleno, a chicken tamale with mole, and a chicken and cheese molote. The flavors, textures and presentation were all lovely. For dessert, my friends split an arroz con leche that had bits of fresh figs on top. They loved it. I don't often write restaurant reviews, but I so thoroughly enjoyed the atmosphere, friendly and very professional service, and delicious food, that I decided to encourage others to try it. The bill for three people with cocktails, starters, dinner and one dessert, with tip included was $170.00. For a special evening out, it was very much worth it.

Their mixiote de pollo is bomb and Ocho Plata "El Pedregal" 2021 is my new favorite tequila. Our server, Ella, was outstanding.
