Having spent years supplying London’s top restaurants through their separate wine businesses, Joe Haynes and Benedict Butterworth have joined forces with Tom Hurst, who has worked at Brawn, The Marksman, Levan, and most recently as Head Chef at Lasdun, to launch the trio’s first restaurant together.

Located in a Grade II listed building on Cloth Fair, Cloth Restaurant is part of a historic row of buildings in the City of London that survived the Great Fire of 1666. Down this atmospheric alley opposite St Bartholomew church, Cloth is taking over a double fronted corner site that’s beneath the former home of poet John Betjeman and next door to the two oldest residential buildings in London.

Inside, low ceilings, wood floorboards with antique wall lights and artwork create a cosy, intimate atmosphere, while marble tables, long dark wood banquettes, antique crockery and cutlery will create the feel of a classic bistro.

Really nice place with interesting menu. The only issue is the acoustics so it’s quite loud even though they don’t have music

Thought the food was excellent with a great wine list. Wines by the glass were OK and the Coravin Barolo was very cold and one glass the contents were muddy which was a little odd and an expensive error at £35 a 125ml glass. Lovely service, convivial atmosphere but round tables for two are tiny and was cramped so even if the noise levels had been less one would find it impossible not to earwig the guest on the next table which felt like they were so close they were in your lap. Contents of cheese board could have been explained but that was probably overlooked as Cloth is very busy!

Another excellent meal at this newly opened French restaurant in Smithfield. Great food, superb wine and charming service. So good, it feels like it’s been around for years! Highly recommended.

I am giving a 3 star for a number of reasons. First when I booked online I thought I had booked a normal table (there was no evidence of seating differentiation online), but when we arrived there wasn’t a specific table reserved. We got offered the only available spaces at the time of arrival. One was a high table with stools or the other option was a normal table but the chairs where pushed on a side as otherwise there would be no space for the waitressing and it just looked uncomfortable and squeezed in. We went for the high table as it had at least more space around but was uncomfortable. Also very annoying that the table didn’t have a hook to hung your coat or bag. The only option being leaving the bag on the floor or on the table and seat on your coat (placed on the stool). None of the options ideal. The overall atmosphere was lively but very noisy and it looked liked they squeezed too many people next to each other. The food was ok but not memorable. For the price (quite high for what it was) you can find similar offering, if not better, in other local restaurants. On the upside the waiters/waitresses were friendly and competent, but the waiting time between starter and main course was too long. Overall for the price we paid, I would at least want to seat in a comfortable chair, not having to worry about finding space for my coat and bags and realistically I would want to have a main course while I still have a bottle of wine on the table. It was a Friday night after all and after a long week you just want a nice meal in a comfortable chair with a nice atmosphere and a bit of space. We won’t return but maybe someone else experience will be different.

Cloth did not disappoint. Quality food and great atmosphere. Service was attentive and low key. Wine fab!

We loved the interesting and well wrought dishes. The service was attentive, but not too much. Crockery, cutlery and bill holders all quirky but elegant. Bravo!
