I booked this restaurant for my boyfriends 60th birthday because it looks like a really cool restaurant got good reviews for their food. The food was good, that is the food that came out when we ordered it. There was one thing we ordered that didn’t come out, but they took it off the bill and brought it anyway and I’m glad I didn’t pay for it because it wasn’t that good. Anyway, what was disappointing was that we were seated in a table in the side room right by the door so the ambience wasn’t cool church it was loud noisy room by the door. I was to order dessert here the staff sing to my boyfriend, but I wasn’t getting the sense that that was something they were interested in doing. the food was good. I wouldn’t go back with all the places in Charleston to eat. Nine dollars for a can of beer was also a little ridiculous.

Service was poor. Brought our salad out twice , then the wrong meal. Waitress didn’t seem that concerned. Fun atmosphere.,

Great ambiance. Great building with a wonderful story to tell, and John, our server, was happy to tell it. Enjoyed a bit of history during our visit. John was attentive but not overbearing. Great evening and we’ll definitely return.

Big open space with a lot of energy. We had the ravioli and Moroccan meatballs and both were delicious. Only possible negative to note is it’s very loud

Cool atmosphere in the old church. Waiter was very attentive and complimentary hummus and chips was a plus. Crab cake entree was delicious but the flounder fresh catch was disappointing. It was slightly overcooked and with just red cabbage and pickled onion as a side it was overpriced at $39.

I had heard and read so much about Church and Union that I made reservations a month in advance to be sure we could brunch there on our last day in Charleston. I was disappointed right off the bat. The hostess was not at all friendly. The food was only ok and we were seated by the bathrooms. Not sure why we would get such a table when there were others available AND we had reservations far in advance. Our server was fine. The restaurant is unique and beautiful. The food was only so so and was very expensive for the quality.

Wagyu meat was described to melt in your mouth as it should. I have had wagyu at least 10 different occasions throughout the U.S., Japan, and South Korea. Even though they stated their is from California, I expected similar quality as it is labeled. Contrary, their wagyu was like a top sirloin (not even close to a filet mignon- which would have been acceptable). Instead it was very chewy with hard fat that was not easy to breakdown after chewing at least 10-15 times per bite. I had to spit out the meat that would not breakdown. The J sauce that came with the “Wagyu” was described as reduction vinaigrette type sauce. Instead it tasted a lot like BBQ sauce. I ordered it medium rare. Arrive almost rare with only seared exterior. It arrived also precut- a little bit shameful to pre cut my Wagyu. Almost like cutting a filet Mignon in advance. Not good. I’m not sure what the big deal is about this place except for the uniqueness of being in an old church. The 3 piece “meatballs” appetizer was tender and good. Our server was not very quick to get back to our table to take our order and waited 5-8 more minutes before we finally just asked the water person if he could take our order. I assumed it’s because we didn’t order “drinks”, or maybe that we are minority, or that he is just that slow to attending to his customers. Interestingly enough though, I walked around the “main part” of the church part of the restaurant (as we were seated in the not main part, and noticed every person in the main “nicer and church part” were all white people. From view there were NO diversity people at all. Though that was not always surprising to me, it was more obvious when all of the minorities were in our section of the restaurant. It’s interesting to pay attention to this. Do the owners train their hostesses to seat minorities together in the “back room”? It seems so often. But in CU it was so obvious (maybe coincidental- who really knows). Overall, for the food alone, it’s not worth it.

I love this place!!! The vibe is awesome - really cool transformation- church turned restaurant. The food is so yummy and the service is great.
